Kanessa Muluneh successfully tells the story of Africa through a Web3 game! An extraordinary journey that begins with forgotten roots to reshape an entire continent, where history becomes a game, and identity becomes a means to build a more just and conscious future. By the Arabiya.Inc team

This article is available in English here.

Kanessa Muluneh, a 34-year-old Ethiopian-Dutch entrepreneur and investor, grew up in what she describes as a "typical immigrant home" in the Netherlands, after her family fled the civil war in Ethiopia when she was just three years old. Muluneh studied medicine, not out of passion, but because it was the only one of the three options presented to her by her family that interested her. The other two, she told Arabiya.Inc, were to become a lawyer or an engineer. “I didn’t know what an engineer was, and I wasn’t interested in reading a law book,” she says. “So I said, ‘Okay, I’m going to medical school because they told me to.’”

While attending medical school, Moloneh founded her first startup as part of her undergraduate internship. At the age of 22, she sold her company, a digital healthcare solution that enabled hospital staff to take calls from home, allowing them to work remotely.

Today, Moloneh has five successful deals from her previous companies and currently runs a family investment office with her husband, an accountant, out of Dubai. Until recently, she focused her investments on technology solutions, particularly non-fungible tokens (NFTs), blockchain technologies, and cryptocurrencies.

However, her first visit to her hometown three years ago and her reconnection with her cultural roots shifted her investment approach from focusing on specific sectors to focusing on geography—from Europe to Africa. “One of the reasons I did this was because I wanted to invest where I belong,” Muluneh says. “I feel the diaspora needs to realize that Africa today is not what it was in our forefathers’ stories.”

After reconnecting with her roots, Muluneh began producing videos in her native language and posting them on TikTok. This unexpectedly led her to connect with communities in Ethiopia, where she realized she could offer real value. She began sharing educational information about non-fungible tokens and blockchain, and eventually came up with an idea from followers to create a video game set in Africa. Hence, Rise of Fearless was born, launched in May of this year as a play-to-earn, last-survivor combat game based on the 1896 Battle of Adwa, a historic battle in which Ethiopia defeated Italy's attempts to occupy it.

Recalling her experience building the game, Moloneh emphasizes that she was keen to ensure that the characters had a distinct African character, from skin tone to hairstyles, to distinguish them from the stereotypical blond-haired, blue-eyed heroes prevalent in other video games. The development team also ensured that the game's environments reflected an authentic African character, including the mud houses common in pre-war Sudan, architecture inspired by the Nubian civilization in North Africa, and the unique trees of Kenya. “I can’t take all the credit,” says Muluneh. “Because the community helped me come up with the idea; I just executed it.”

As a skilled marketer, she believes the game can improve the continent’s image abroad. “I think the marketing of Africa, Asia, or the Middle East is often poor, always featuring crime or poverty,” she says. That’s why she chose to base her game on the battle of Adwa, telling a unique story of triumph. “I thought, ‘This is a beautiful story. Why? Because Africa is so badly marketed…’ So I said, ‘Why don’t we tell a story of triumph? It’s a tribute to the struggle they fought, and it has such profound meaning in Africa, that no one knows anything about it.”

In April 2025, Muluneh launched a $700,000 funding round to promote Web3 gaming in Africa, ahead of its official launch at the Adwa Museum in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa. The company claims that the game, which launched in May, has already attracted 3,000 users, and plans to launch an in-game store during the summer and integrate Web3 functionality by the end of the year. Its goal is to attract 100,000 players and generate $20 million in revenue by the end of the year. Future projects include developing a PC version of the game and integrating AI technologies into the gameplay. One of the most important lessons Moloneh learned while developing Rise of the Brave, she says, is that profit shouldn't be the sole motivation for entering the African market. She explains: "When you enter the African market, you have to consider the social aspect. It can't just be for yourself. That's where a lot of people fail when they enter this market. There should always be a community dimension... That's why I said, 'If we do this, what's the reason besides entertainment? What can we offer? Well, it can be a way to make money, or it can be a way to build a community.'"

Muluneh''s focus on community is evident in her pledge to invest at least 15% of the company's profits to support the construction of gaming centers and companies in Africa. She adds: "My ultimate goal would be to create centers across the continent where people can come and play together as a community."
