"Everyday Life in the Spectacular City” is a photo exhibit by Dr. Rana AlMutawa, showcasing 33 documentary photographs taken during her fieldwork from 2017-2021 for her book Everyday Life in the Spectacular City: Making Home in Dubai. 🤩

The exhibit and book explore how middle-class citizens and longtime residents of Dubai interact with the city’s spaces to create meaningful social lives, challenging Orientalist narratives that portray Dubai as superficial and alienating.

Through extensive fieldwork, Dr. AlMutawa, an Emirati herself, highlights how development projects like malls and mega projects serve residents’ evolving social needs, transforming Dubai’s spectacular spaces into culturally significant sites.👏
