Dubai's newest independent bookstore and cultural centre, Kutubna Cultural Center, will host a unique coffee, art, and writing experience on Sunday, August 25, at 5 pm. The event will take place at Kutubna's exhibit "One Hundred Years of Painting: Art from 1916 to 2017" and will showcase works by renowned artists.

This immersive event will feature a guided tour of the art exhibit, a tasting of curated specialty coffee from around the world, and a creative writing workshop. Six paintings by Khaled Ben Slimane, Najat Makki, and Ali Hassan will be paired with nine types of specialty coffee sourced from Colombia, Uganda, El Salvador, Ethiopia, and Brazil. These coffees are roasted at Cazador Specialty Coffee Roasters.

They will discuss the notes and flavours of each coffee and how these flavours correspond to the colours and emotions evoked by each art piece. This multisensory experience aims to engage participants' senses of sight, smell, and taste as they view the art while enjoying the coffee flavours.

Following the tour and tasting session, attendees can participate in a writing workshop. This workshop provides a creative space for participants to reflect on the emotions stirred by the art and coffee. They can explore their thoughts through writing poetry, prose, fiction or nonfiction. Prompts will be provided to help guide their creativity.

Connecting Through Art and Coffee The sensory experience allows attendees to connect more deeply with both the displayed art and the paired coffee types. It also offers an opportunity for participants to connect with fellow art lovers, coffee enthusiasts, and writers. Kutubna aims to foster community building and create an inclusive space for cultural exchange and creative expression.

Renowned Artists Featured Khaled Ben Slimane is a Tunisian ceramicist, sculptor, and painter known for using letters, words, and Qur'anic verses in his spiritually themed artworks. His use of primary colours symbolises earth, fire, wind, and water. Ben Slimane's compositions often include rough black brushstrokes alongside delicate spirals that invite reflection. Ali Hassan is one of Qatar's most celebrated artists. He is known for his semi-abstract mixed media compositions that utilise watercolour, pencil, ceramic art works along with oil paints, soft chalks and charcoal on coloured paper to convey vibrant colours with melancholic undertones. Najat Makki is one of UAE's most acclaimed visual artists. She has received numerous awards including the Order of Arts and Letters from the French Government (2023) and Emirates Appreciation Award (2015). Her works have been exhibited internationally at events such as Beijing International Biennial (2016), ADMAF's Portrait of a Nation (Abu Dhabi 2016; Berlin 2017), National Pavilion UAE Venice Biennial (Italy 2015), Luxor International Symposium of Photography (Egypt 2014), China International Sculpture Symposium (China 2008).
