James, a former owner of Langley Castle and cousin to the Old Pretender, James Edward Stuart, led the march on Preston in the first Jacobite uprising and was beheaded at the Tower of London following his defeat at the Battle of Preston. History suggests James was less than keen to join the march in the first place!
