Although the current weather might be deceiving, autumn is just around the corner and landscapes will soon be covered by a pretty blanket of vibrant leaves. With the upcoming drop in temperature and diminishing sunlight, the next few months can put gardens under immense pressure. So, while the weather is still warm and sunny, get outdoors and prepare lawns and plants for the big seasonal transition. Gardening expert WOLF-Garten has compiled its top tasks to complete this season to ensure gardens flourish through the tougher months.
One of the more important jobs for gardeners in autumn is to prune flowering stems of perennials as they wilt. If not kept on top of, not only will they become unsightly, but without deadheading a gardener risks spreading pests and diseases to the rest of the plant and any nearby shrubs. The WOLF-Garten Bypass Secateurs are ideal for delicate and precise pruning on younger growth. It provides a very clean cut which is essential for maintaining a thriving plant and reducing damage to any healthy growth. The ergonomically designed handles have an integrated thumb rest for safety and feature non-stick blades to effortlessly cut through stems up to 22mm thick.
The UK's changing climate means that spring is now typically much drier and warmer, making it harder for new plants to establish themselves. Plant your spring bulbs and flowers in autumn to ensure they obtain good root growth while the weather is cooler and moister. Make this task easier with a Bulb Planter which helps to create uniform planting holes for flower bulbs of up to 6cm³. To use, simply push the tool into the soil, twist and lift to remove the soil, plant the bulb in the hole and press the handle to release the soil back into the ground. The planter’s serrated edge helps to insert it into the ground with ease, while the side measure helps to gauge planting depth up to 10cm.
This season is also a good time to scarify the lawn and remove built-up debris from the surface. Use a good quality metal rake to collect any grass, leaves, weeds, and thatch that have accumulated over the preceding months to make sure the lawn stays healthy and in good condition. WOLF-Garten’s Lawn Rake has a unique curved fan shape and a wide raking span which effectively clears and collects grass from large areas. The tines are made of flexible spring steel which means they will move around stones and gravel as the rake is pulled and are also designed to glide across the grass without digging in and damaging it.
