As we head towards better weather and warmer days, it’s the perfect time to add a splash of spring colour and texture to flower beds and borders. From pansies to clematis, there are an array of flowers and plants to add to your garden to create a colourful and welcoming environment throughout the spring months.
With so many different plants and shrubs to choose from, it can be difficult to know where to start. To help make garden centre shopping even easier, Hillier Garden Centres shares its top five plants to create a flourishing and colourful garden this spring.
New for 2023, the Erysimum ‘Colour Vibe’ collection is sure to add a pop of colour to any flower bed or planter. Available in red and orange, these hardy plants can be placed in full sun or light shade, staying in bloom from March until early summer. These delightful plants are the first new colours to be exclusively launched at Hillier this year.
Add some texture to your spring borders with the Tiarella ‘Raspberry Sundae’. These hardy perennial plants start as deep raspberry pink buds, opening into pale white-pink, star-shaped flowers in the spring. Preferring moist, well-drained soil in full sun, the Tiarella is perfect for adding height and colour to mixed borders. The Tiarella ‘Raspberry Sundae’ is a 2-litre plant, estimated to grow 0.3 metres wide and 0.25 metres high adding mid-height element to garden beds.
A spring garden classic, the iris is ideal for mixed herbaceous or cottage gardens to inject a boost of colour. Blooming in early summer, the delicately ruffled flowers of the Iris Night Edition are ideal for a sunny spot in the garden, adding a splash of pale blue and dark purple to flower beds or patio pots. Spreading 0.5 metres and growing to heights of 0.9 metres the Iris Night Edition is available to purchase online and in centres in a 2-litre pot.
Create height in your garden with the Lupinus ‘Manhattan Lights’. These exquisite perennials feature terminal racemes of deep purple-red flowers with orange flecks, flowering from late spring to early summer. The Lupinus is a fantastic choice for adding colour and height to herbaceous and mixed borders, standing out amongst traditional bedding plants. Towering above the other plants in the garden, the Lupinus ‘Manhattan Light’s can grow as tall as 0.9 metres and spread 0.75 metres across.
Shrubs are a great addition to mixed beds and the Magnolia stellata ‘Water Lily’ is sure to take centre stage. Flowering in spring, the deciduous shrub produces silky buds, opening into delicate star-shaped white flowers with spreading petals. Growing approximately 5.5 metres wide and growing 6 metres in height, Magnolias are excellent for a bright and sunny spot in the garden. This show-stopping shrub is available as an established 5-litre plant both instore and online.

Hillier is the most successful exhibitor in the history of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, having been awarded 74 consecutive gold medals.
The company was founded in 1864 by Edwin Hillier and remains a family-run nursery with the fifth generation now actively involved in the family business as it continues to grow. The company employs over 750 staff across its nursery, amenity trees and 22 garden centre divisions, and grows over one million plants a year. It is the largest tree grower in the UK.
Over the years, Hillier has been responsible for numerous plant introductions, many of which have become essentials in British gardens and it continues with the tradition of innovation and the introduction of new garden plants in the present day.
