Iconic Lakeland event, Grasmere Lakeland Sports and Show, is seeking Sports-makers – volunteers who will assume a similar role to ‘games makers’ at Olympic and Commonwealth games, to help with a variety of aspects of organisation and put smiles on faces.
The desire to become a Sports-maker is one that will be rooted in pride in Lakeland traditions and a determination to become part of the history of an event that stretches back to 1868 and has only ever been cancelled due to the two World Wars and Covid-19.
It will also be driven by the wish to operate as part of a passionate community team, whilst making new friends, learning new skills and gaining self-esteem. For some, volunteering will also provide something new to put on the CV. In fact, one volunteer last year discovered that the first question they faced at interview related to any volunteering they had undertaken. They subsequently gained a good IT job with a leading car manufacturer.
Volunteer Sports-makers at Grasmere Lakeland Sports and Show will be getting involved with everything from helping to prepare the field, to recording the names of winners and runners-up, in a wide number of on-field races.
They could be assisting with ticket administration in the office or helping make sure that events run smoothly and on time. A wide variety of general tasks will also be allocated across the volunteers team.
Manager of the Grasmere Lakeland Sports and Show, Deborah Black, says, “Our Sports-makers are the lifeblood of the event and we are always looking to welcome more to the team. Anyone who wishes to be a part of something special on August Bank Holiday Sunday, and wants to help deliver our engrossing traditional sports and family fun event, just needs to get in touch.
“Volunteer as a group of friends, as an individual or a student looking to demonstrate that they have taken on voluntary work in their community. All volunteer Sports-makers are most welcome.”
