A brand-new itinerary created by Experience Sussex has been launched to encourage cyclists taking on the 247-mile Avenue Verte route, which connects London and Paris, to take a break in Newhaven, the Sussex town full of history, stunning scenery and independent cafes and pubs.

The itinerary has been designed for cyclists staying in the town for as little as two hours or as long as a few days and showcases all the bike-friendly places to explore in and around this stop along the greenway, which is the only gateway that links the Avenue Verte route between England and France.

Jo Williams from Experience Sussex said: "Cycling fever has swept the nation with the Tour de France, and for those inspired to get on two wheels, Newhaven is perfectly placed as both a starting point and a natural pause along the Avenue Verte.

"As a gateway between England and France, Newhaven is much more than just a crossing point; it's a place to arrive early, stay for longer, and really start your journey. Whether you've just arrived from Dieppe or waiting to head over on the ferry, Newhaven offers the perfect opportunity to refuel, recharge and discover somewhere new.

"We've created a Newhaven itinerary to show there's plenty to enjoy beyond the harbour walls and the ferry port. From incredible coastal rides and nearby highlights like Newhaven Fort and the Seven Sisters Country Park, to relaxed pit stops in independent cafes, pubs and eateries, there's something for every kind of cyclist."

The itinerary uncovers hidden gems in and around Newhaven which are loved by locals and perfect for visitors embarking on and off the Newhaven to Dieppe ferry.

Newhaven Fort is listed on the itinerary and is a stand-out spot in the town. The fort is a 19th-century coastal defence home to military exhibitions and historic tunnels, which also boasts a cycle-friendly café called Cadence on site.

Experience Sussex has included local breweries and restaurants on the itinerary for cyclists who enjoy a pint and a pedal, such as Mahmoosh Riverside, ABYSS Brewery at The Sidings, The Hope Inn and the Long Man Brewery in Litlington, all of which can be cycled to.

Highlights of the itinerary include two boat trips which take passengers out to hidden coves, historic smuggling spots, as well as the Rampion Offshore Windfarm to learn more about local dolphins, run by Maverick Boat Adventures and Sussex Boat Trips.

There is a varied list of accommodation in the itinerary for cyclists looking to spend the night in the area.

The Cuckmere Cottages and Camping, which are car-free, self-catering cottages one mile into the Seven Sisters Country Park, as well as the 29-bedroom luxury hotel The Star in Alfriston, both feature.

Experience Sussex has incorporated bike supplies and servicing locations in the itinerary, as well as information on the types of terrain in Newhaven and the surrounding area.

Williams added: "This summer, we're encouraging riders to make the most of Newhaven, not just pass through it. Take time to explore, soak up the atmosphere, and turn your journey into a richer travel experience from the very first mile."
