  • Selective Asia spotlights seasonally distinctive destinations for travellers seeking an alternative to sweltering summer city breaks
  • Options include Hokkaido, Japan, with its alpine landscapes and flower fields; Northern Vietnam’s Mu Cang Chai, known for misty mountains and rice terraces; and Ladakh, Northern India where temperatures typically range from 15 to 25°C
  • Monsoon travel is on the rise, with Kerala and other regions embracing the season as a time for healing, reflection, and renewal

With temperatures soaring across Europe and North America, travellers are increasingly looking for ways to make summer more enjoyable - or simply more memorable. Selective Asia, a B-Corp tour operator, highlights destinations offering distinctive seasonal experiences: Hokkaido’s misty highlands and flower fields, Kerala and Wayanad’s monsoon-lush landscapes perfect for relaxation, Northern Vietnam’s misty mountains and rice terraces, and Komodo cruises in Indonesia, where ocean air and island-hopping adventures beat the heat.

International travel to Asia continues to grow strongly in 2025. According to the UNWTO, arrivals in Asia and the Pacific increased by 12% in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, with North-East Asia leading the recovery with a 23% increase.

‘With much of Europe sweltering in record heat, these aren’t your typical summer holidays,’ says Nick Pulley, founder of Selective Asia. “Some of our destinations are breezy or ocean-based. Others - like Europe at this time of year - are at their seasonal peak, but have monsoon rains, alpine blooms, and crisp mountain air. Each offers a distinctive way to experience the season - immersive, memorable, and far from the relentless heat back home.’

Seasonal standouts across Asia

Hokkaido, Japan

Japan’s northernmost island is a well-kept summer secret. Although in its hottest season, there are average highs of only around 24 -26°C in Sapporo, it offers sweeping flower fields in Furano, national parks with forested hiking trails, and an almost alpine atmosphere during the country’s so-called ‘green season.’ It’s Japan - without the summer swelter.

Northern Vietnam

Mu Cang Chai, set between 1,000–1,500m above sea level, is renowned for its sweeping rice terraces and forested mountain trails. During the warmer months, visitors can enjoy cool mornings, immersive village stays, and mist-draped landscapes - offering a refreshing escape from the lowland heat and humidity.

Sri Lanka’s Hill Country

From Kandy to Ella, Sri Lanka’s tea-covered highlands feel a world away from coastal heat. In places like Nuwara Eliya - known as ‘Little England’ - daytime temperatures sit comfortably between 17–20°C. Explore rainforest trails, colonial-era railways, and working tea estates with Selective Asia’s immersive itineraries.

Kerala & Wayanad, India

Yes, it’s monsoon season - and that’s exactly the appeal. Kerala’s highlands turn lush, tranquil, and deeply restorative. It’s one of the few places in the world to actively celebrate the rains, promoting monsoon travel as a time for healing, reflection, and renewal. Rooted in tradition, Ayurveda embraces this season, with many treatments believed to be most effective when the air is cool and humid. Waterfalls thunder to life, forests breathe deeply, and homestays feel wrapped in green - as Monsoon Tourism continues to grow.

Ladakh, Northern India

Located in the northernmost part of India’s Jammu and Kashmir region, it is celebrated for its dramatic landscapes, serene high-altitude lakes, and centuries-old Buddhist villages. The region’s busiest travel period falls between June and August, however the weather is comfortably mild, with daytime temperatures typically ranging from 15 to 25°C. Despite the pleasant days, the high elevation means nights can remain chilly.

Komodo Cruises, Indonesia

It’s the driest month of the year across the Nusa Tenggara islands with little other than sunshine and clear blue skies to distract you. Rainfall is unlikely however humidity levels are low and average temperatures are a comfortable 26-27°C. Sometimes the coolest option is being at sea. Komodo cruises offer natural ocean air-conditioning and island-hopping adventures that bypass the mainland’s heat altogether. Evenings are spent beneath the stars, and mornings bring sightings of Komodo dragons - without the crowds or the sweat.
