This 23rd-24th November at Sandown Park Racecourse, visitors are invited to discover the fascinating world of minerals and gemstones
London, UK – The London Gem & Mineral Show, taking place on the 23rd and 24th of November, is an unmissable event for anyone passionate about geology, minerals, and the scientific marvels beneath our very feet. This year’s show offers an exciting opportunity for scientists, geology enthusiasts, and curious minds alike to explore the scientific side of the mineral world. Starting at just £10.00, guests can immerse themselves in hands-on demonstrations, live geological experiments, and expert-led workshops, designed to reveal the fascinating science behind gemstones and minerals.
A major highlight is sure to be the WOW Rocks: Live Cracking Station, where visitors will be able to witness live rock-cracking demonstrations and uncover stunning geodes and Jurassic-period fossils that have been preserved for over 180 million years. Led by seasoned experts, this exclusive demonstration allows participants to see first-hand the science behind uncovering the natural wonders hidden in ancient rocks. It’s an immersive experience that’s not to be missed, and is perfect for anyone eager to explore geological formations and fossil preservation.
The show also offers a further two key educational spaces: the Demo Hub and Learning Lab. The Demo Hub invites visitors to craft their own gemstone and silver creations, providing a rare opportunity to work with minerals and learn about the techniques used in jewellery making. Meanwhile, the Learning Lab will host dynamic workshops exploring the scientific principles behind geological processes. Adding to the robust scientific offerings in the Learning Lab, the show incorporates several experts, namely geologist Luisa Hendry, leading the Identification of Rocks and Minerals workshop. For just £20.00, attendees will gain a foundational understanding of rock formation and classification, handle real rock and mineral samples, and learn to identify common minerals by properties like hardness and lustre.
Building on the immersive experiences at the Demo Hub and Learning Lab, the show will also feature leading talent, bringing a wealth of expertise and insight into the gemstone world. Headlining are the Opal Whisperers, best known for their appearance on the hit Discovery Channel & Quest TV show ‘Outback Opal Hunters’, Isaac and Sofia Andreou will share their skills in opal identification, mining and showcase some of their rarest and most exclusive opal pieces.
For those wanting to learn as much as possible from the experts, the event has a dedicated series of in-depth discussions, collectively coined WOW Talks. Keynote speakers at the upcoming event include Jolyon Ralph, the founder of Mindat.org, will delve into the world of minerals with Learning About Minerals with mindat.org, showcasing the platform's vast database and how it supports enthusiasts and professionals in identifying minerals from around the globe. Sarah Caldwell Steele, a renowned gemologist, is also teaching guests the historical association and scientific qualities of the gemstone ‘Jet' with her talk entitled Vampires, Mummies and that Old Black Magic: the Legacy of Whitby's Jet.
Furthermore, in A Painted Journey Through Jewels, Justin Prim, an expert gem cutter, will discuss the scientific precision behind gem cutting and the artistry required to transform raw stones into beautiful pieces, and finally GeologyVibes in their discussion, Traditional to Digital Journey of Pakistani Gem Market, will highlight the rapidly advancing Pakistani gem market, sharing insights into how technological and geological innovations are shaping the industry’s future
Since its inception, The London Gem & Mineral Show has been committed to making a positive impact beyond the world of gems. This year, the show is proud to have partnered with the Kimbilio Congo Children Trust, raising both money and awareness for their vital work in taking child miners off the streets of the Democratic Republic of Congo. These children, who work in hazardous cobalt mines, are offered a chance at a better life through the trust’s efforts, which provide housing, education, and sanctuary. Since 2009, Kimbilio has been transforming the futures of these children, giving them renewed hope and opportunities for a brighter tomorrow.
The London Gem & Mineral Show provides an unparalleled opportunity for science-minded individuals to explore the geology and mineralogy of our planet, uncovering the mysteries of the Earth’s natural treasures while gaining insight into the latest scientific advancements in the field.
