Tavo Pets, the pet protection brand from the creators of the premium child car seat brand Nuna Baby, holds the uncompromising belief that life is better for people and pets when it’s shared. That’s why they’re working to reshape the road ahead for pet safety and educating their global audience on the best practices to follow while travelling with their pets.
A recent global study commissioned by Tavo Pets and conducted in cooperation with the global data and business intelligence platform Statista revealed that far too many pet parents hit the road without safely restraining their pet in the vehicle.
“People don’t think they’ll be [involved] in a collision - until they are,” says Caitlin Taylor, Road Safety Manager, The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), Edinburgh, Scotland. “People don’t really, truly, appreciate how dangerous it can be if your dog is not restrained and how dangerous distraction can be in general [while driving].”
The study involved 5,000 pet owners across 10 countries, with each respondent answering 6 to 12 questions regarding safety practices when driving with their pets. Its results highlight how common risky travel behaviours are among pet owners around the world:
The reality is much more serious. In a crash, an unrestrained pet can become a projectile with a force 30 to 60 times its body weight. For a 15 kg dog, that’s at least 450 kg, enough to seriously injure not only your pet, but other vehicle occupants as well.
In the same study, 82% of pet owners in the UK reported that they travel with at least one other person in the car when their pet is along for the ride. So, this isn’t just a pet safety issue, it’s a family safety issue.
“We all know the catastrophic injuries that can occur as a result of being in a car accident, especially when you're not wearing a seatbelt,” says Dr. Scott Miller, BVSC, MRCVS, Veterinary Surgeon and Tavo Pets Global Ambassador. “All you need to do is reflect on the same thing with regard to your dog or cat.”
Tavo Pets is dedicated to changing the way people move through life with their pets. Their latest campaign, “Imagine the Impact: Shaping the Road Ahead for Pet Safety,” aims to raise awareness and encourage action regarding safe travel practices for pets.
“With Imagine the Impact, we want to ignite a conversation and shine a light on the realities of travelling with unrestrained pets,” says Helen Johnson, Marketing Director at Tavo Pets and Nuna Baby. “Our research and expert insights make it clear—the risk is real, yet many people are unaware of the dangers. At Nuna, we’re experts in child car seat safety, and with Tavo, we’re applying that same standard of care to pets. We want to bring the same level of understanding people have around protecting children in vehicles to those travelling with pets. This campaign is about progression, it’s about recognising that pet safety is family safety.”
