OPRL is delighted with news of the appointment of Karen Graley as Head of the EPR Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO).

Graley is also a non-executive director at OPRL. Interim MD Jude Allan congratulated Graley on her new role, saying, “Karen is the perfect person for this key role at a pivotal moment in pEPR. Her breadth of experience, collaborative style and drive to make positive change will make a great impact.

“At OPRL we have been lucky to have Karen at the heart of our business since the beginning. As joint-chair of the OPRL Technical Advisory Committee, she ensures that our recommendations are evidence-based and well-informed. Her strategic overview and drive to make a difference, evaluate and make considered decisions – on a materials-agnostic basis – have been hugely valued. We are really excited for what the future brings.”

As head of the PRO, Karen will work with PackUK and industry stakeholdersto set up the EPR Producer Responsibility Organisation. The PRO is being established by obligated producers, led by the Food and Drink Federation (FDF) and Industry Council for Packaging and the Environment (INCPEN),  to drive improvements in the UK’s recycling system and ensure that the funds raised by EPR are used to boost recycling rates and create a circular economy for packaging.

Editors notes

• OPRL Ltd operates the UK-wide On-Pack Recycling Label scheme used by over 750 member companies and charities. It is the leading independent expert in packaging recyclability, providing recycling and refill labels – and advice – to 95 per cent of the UK groceries market.

• OPRL is an independent, not-for-profit company limited by guarantee, established to help retailers and brands engage their customers in recycling.

• The company’s guarantors span ACE UK, Alupro, British Glass, CPI, INCPEN, LARAC, MPMA and RECOUP.

• OPRL was launched in 2009, as a not-for-profit limited by guarantee as part of the British Retail Consortium (BRC). The move followed work between BRC, the Food and Drink Federation (FDF) and their leading members, and WRAP. The aim was to devise a labelling system that would engage consumers with recycling, as local authorities started to roll out basic services. Three of the founding directors are still on our board.
