Why Cascais Is Becoming Portugal's Capital of Cultural Events

Just 30 minutes from the bustling city of Lisbon, Cascais is a destination not only known for its beaches and fresh seafood, but also where visitors can combine leisure with world-class music, creativity and authentic Portuguese culture.

Every year there are a number of events happening in Cascais, ranging from lively music festivals to challenging triathlons. Key highlights of the Cascais cultural calendar include the IRONMAN, Chefs on Fire, Estoril Classics and Ageas CoolJazz festival. Cascais offers something for everyone, especially as holidaymakers center their escapes around activities, as found by research done by American Express. American Express found that 79% of travelers are likely to seek out local activities specific to the destination they’re visiting in 2026, especially if it leaves a lasting impression.

Chefs On Fire

This fiery celebration brings together renowned chefs from all over Portugal to cook their exclusively designed menus on fire, smoke and firewood. Their movements will be framed by the crackle of flames and the scent of charred embers in the air. Drawing on their life experiences and the soul of their own restaurants, they’ll transform the simplest ingredients into dishes layered with flavor, texture, and character. From succulent meats sizzling over the coals, to gently smoked fresh fish and charred vegetables for extra depth, there will be flavors to tempt every palate.

The festival is built on Sustainable Hedonism, creating joy responsibly without excess. As one of Portugal’s most sustainable festivals, it’s guided by eight core pillars including nature, equality, and food waste. More than 1,000 trees have been planted to offset firewood use, a zero-plastic policy is enforced, and surplus food is donated to Refood.

Beyond the gastronomic delights, Chefs on Fire also offers a full-fledged festival extravaganza. With live performances from some of the most promising Portuguese musicians, attendees of all ages will be kept entertained across the weekend.

Estoril Classics

Estoril Classics marks its tenth year in 2026, and it's grown into one of Europe's most respected historic motorsport festivals along the way. Created in 2017 to bring the world's most important classic cars and competitions to the Autódromo do Estoril, it quickly became a fixture for classic car and motorbike enthusiasts everywhere. The festival spans several decades of racing history in a single weekend, with free grandstand access along the main straight and paddock tickets that allow visitors close access to the cars and teams.

Its reach goes beyond race weekend. Estoril Classics is raising Cascais' standing among motorsport enthusiasts year-round, drawing classic car club visits, race testing ahead of other events and growth in Portugal's car restoration industry, all while giving more visitors reason to see Cascais as a destination worth returning to.

IRONMAN

This year's IRONMAN day brings two triathlon distances to the coast, a full IRONMAN and an IRONMAN 70.3, giving athletes the best of Cascais from the very first stroke. The swim starts at sunrise in one of Portugal's most spectacular bays, with supporters cheering from the shore. A loop through the Circuito do Estoril F1 track adds a distinctive edge to the bike leg. It all adds up to one of the most memorable triathlon routes around. After the race, a few days relaxing on a Cascais beach round off the perfect Portuguese adventure by the ocean.

Ageas CoolJazz

First launched in 2004, Ageas CoolJazz Festival has become a highlight of Portugal’s summer events calendar. Known for its carefully curated program, the festival blends jazz with a wide range of contemporary sounds, from soul and pop to indie and electronic music. Over the years, it has attracted internationally recognised artists as well as emerging performers.

The festival takes place in Cascais’ Museum Quarter, with concerts held in the Hipodromo Manuel Possolo and Parque Marechal Carmona. These open-air locations give visitors a perfect backdrop for the performances, offering audiences the chance to enjoy live music in a picturesque environment just minutes from the Atlantic coast. Previous editions of the event have welcomed world-renowned artists such as Seal, John Legend, Van Morrison and Lionel Richie.
