Northumberland hotel, Langley Castle, is aiming to increase a passion for history amongst both locals and visitors alike, by highlighting some of the historical facts within its very own ‘Hairy History’.
Langley Castle has shaped its own remarkable history into a user and children-friendly format, producing its own ‘Hairy History’ downloadable booklet, which has a nod to ‘Horrible Histories’. This is free to access at its website.
Now, the castle has dissected the booklet, pulling out interesting snippets, four use within a month of social media posts. Intriguing questions will be posted at its Facebook and Instagram pages, on a one-a-day basis, from January 24 – the birthday of the Emperor Hadrian. This will continue for 31 days, as the castle stages its ‘Month of History’.
Anyone who can answer all of the questions posed, can have their name entered into a prize draw, and potentially win an overnight stay for two, in its Castle View accommodation, with its renowned Northumberland breakfast the following morning.
As Langley Castle’s ‘Hairy History’ itself starts in Roman times and, as this is Hadrian’s Wall’s 1900th anniversary, this focus on history could not be more appropriate.
The booklet has already led to a remarkable quadrupling of the numbers arriving to head off on the castle’s daily Battlements Tours, with the details Hairy History provides being either the perfect appetiser for a tour or a wonderful chance to build on knowledge after a tour. The tours are free to residents and available at a small cost to non-residents.
The castle says guests, young and old, can also have their eyes opened by ‘Hairy History’, gaining a new perspective on everything around them in their accommodation, thanks to the remarkable goings on at Langley Castle. These not only stretch back to 1350, when the castle was built, but also draw on Roman history and events before 1350.
Executive General Manager, Margaret Livingstone-Evans, says: “Our history is so vibrant, so relevant for schoolchildren studying history and such a large part of a stay here that we simply cannot ignore it. Our month of history will further bring it to life and make people wish to find the answer to our questions. When it comes to delivering an authentic English castle stay, we certainly have all the answers.”
Questions will have participants finding out which King said ‘nein’, which Italian said ‘si’ and which figure, named like a football team, probably caused Langley to be torched. They will cover everything from Roman letters, to mess-ups by medieval builders, and have people thinking about a plethora of things, including ballads, the Northern Lights, the Gunpowder Plot and even Tim Healy!
If you wish to find the answers, all you have to do is download Hairy History from www.langleycastle.co.uk
