London, UK, 17 March 2022 - Enel X announces the launch of its new e-Bus division in the UK to support cities, local authorities and public transport operators as they transition to cleaner bus fleets. Its ambition is to provide infrastructure and electrification services to over 100 buses over multiple sites within 12 months.
According to forecasts by independent advisory firm Accuracy, the UK’s electric bus fleet is set to grow by 180% and will become the biggest in Europe by 2024. Enel X plans to support the implementation and operation of e-Buses in the UK in 2022, with significant growth planned for the following years.
Since 2015, Enel X has delivered successful e-Bus projects in South America, Europe and the USA that serve around 3,000 e-Buses. Its entry into the UK market will provide valuable expertise to help achieve the UK government’s ambition to decarbonise transport and meet net zero targets.
Michael Kent, e-Bus Business Development Manager at Enel X UK said: “UK cities, local authorities and transport operators have tough targets to decarbonise transport fleets. Using e-Buses powered by renewable energy can cut fleet carbon emissions to 0%. Our e-Bus service will support decision makers through the whole process from planning, funding options, vehicle procurement, infrastructure installation, monitoring, maintenance, and wider smart city services. We are excited to be able to offer our experience and service to the UK.”
Enel X has already developed, installed, and operates charging facilities at 27 depots globally. Each depot has been planned and installed in close cooperation with local authorities and transport operators and predominantly uses electricity procured from renewable sources.
In the USA, Enel X is working on projects to electrify around 300 buses across multiple projects and is leveraging its demand response platform to provide flexibility services to the grid through electric school buses. It has also developed a smart-microgrid project to charge 16 e-Buses through a PV+Storage system installed at a depot in Massachusetts.
Alessio Tizzanini, Head of Global e-Bus Business Development at Enel X said: “Enel X is the largest provider of e-Bus solutions in the world, outside China. Today we manage nearly 3,000 e-Buses globally with an electrification target of over 20,000 e-Buses served by 2030. It’s an ambitious target, which can be achieved thanks to our unique experience. We are looking forward to supporting the UK Government and public transport operators as they work towards net zero targets.”
