PTSD Resolution, the UK charity providing free mental health therapy for Armed Forces veterans, reservists and their families, received 633 referrals in 2025–26 — a 63% increase on the previous year.
The charity has expanded through targeted outreach to raise awareness of its services, alongside growing partnerships and collaborations with organisations across the veterans' support sector to help ensure those in need can access timely care. By keeping barriers to access low and maintaining a nationwide therapist network, PTSD Resolution has steadily developed one of the UK’s largest independently funded therapy networks for veterans.
All treatment is delivered free to clients, at an average cost of £910 per therapy course. Since it was founded in 2009 by Colonel Tony Gauvain (retired) and therapist Piers Bishop, PTSD Resolution has now supported nearly 5,000 veterans and family members.
Charles Highett, CEO of PTSD Resolution, said:
"The past year has shown what can be achieved when a service is designed around the needs of veterans and their families. We accept referrals from any source — including self-referrals — and we do not impose eligibility criteria that might prevent someone from getting help.
"We work hard to ensure people are still seen quickly and treated with care and dignity. We are grateful to the many organisations and individuals who work alongside us to help veterans access support earlier."
Clinical Standards
Despite the significant increase in demand, the charity maintained an average of just 12 days from registration to first therapy session throughout the year.
A peer-reviewed study published in Occupational Medicine (Hall and Greenberg, 2025, Volume 75, Issue 2) found that 79% of clients achieved reliable improvement, 82% completed their full course of therapy, and two-thirds of those treated specifically for PTSD made a full clinical recovery.
The charity's caseload increasingly includes veterans experiencing complex PTSD, involving multiple sources of trauma before, during and after military service. Outcomes for this group have remained strong, despite clients often presenting with more severe initial trauma scores.
Working Alongside Statutory Services
In 2025–26, 11% of clients were signposted or referred through NHS-Op Courage and GP services, with treatment funded through charitable support.
Highett said:
"We welcome every referral and will always focus on the veteran in front of us. Our approach is straightforward: if someone asks for help, we provide it. Our focus is on providing prompt, flexible support tailored to individual needs, ensuring veterans and their families can access help quickly and continue treatment for as long as clinically appropriate.
"The growth in referrals to PTSD Resolution does not necessarily indicate greater need, but rather growing awareness of a service that is accessible, trusted and proven to be effective."
NHS Veteran Aware Accreditation
The year of record activity also saw PTSD Resolution receive Veteran Aware accreditation by the Veterans Covenant Healthcare Alliance (VCHA), an NHS-backed programme supporting high standards of care for the Armed Forces community.
To achieve the accreditation, the charity met eight national standards covering clinical governance, staff training and referral pathways into and out of specialist services, including Op COURAGE.
The accreditation sits alongside PTSD Resolution's existing recognition by the Royal College of Psychiatrists' Quality Network for Veterans Mental Health Services (QNVMHS).
Highett said:
"We are pleased to receive this recognition, which reflects the dedication of our therapists, staff and partners across the country.
"Most importantly, we hope it gives veterans and their families confidence that they will receive professional, compassionate and well-supported care when they reach out for help."

PTSD Resolution: Free, Prompt, Confidential and Effective treatment for Military Post-Traumatic Stress
PTSD Resolution, Charity No. 1202649, provides therapy for the mental welfare of Forces’ Veterans, Reservists and their families. Treatment is free, effective and delivered promptly and locally through a network of 200 therapists nationwide, and also by phone and internet. The charity can also work with organisations to help the mental welfare of their non-veteran staff, by arrangement.
Founded in 2009, the charity is accredited by the Royal College of Psychiatrists to the Quality Network for Veterans Mental Health Services (QNVMHS). It has had over 3,500 referrals to date, and delivers therapy in an average of seven sessions, with major number of cases seeing an improvement to where the client and therapist agree that no further therapy is required.
The charity is one of the only organisations to provide therapy to veterans suffering with addiction issues or who are in prison - as well as to family members, including partners and children, who may experience the symptoms of trauma from living with a traumatised veteran.
PTSD Resolution has a uniquely ‘lean’ operation, with no salaried staff or assets - funds are used to deliver therapy and for essential research and public information.
