Sense and Sensibility Is Back: The Real Locations Behind the New Austen Adaptation That Fans Can Visit

Jane Austen is back on the big screen. Director Georgia Oakley's new adaptation of Sense and Sensibility, starring Daisy Edgar-Jones, arrives in UK cinemas on 25 September 2026. 

And, with Google searches for “Sense and Sensibility film 2026” up 1031% in the last quarter, it's safe to say Austen fans are already counting down.* 

Much of the filming took place in the South West, from Dartmoor's open moor to a Somerset house last seen in Austen's most famous adaptation, so set-jetting fans don't need to travel far to see the real backdrop of the Dashwood sisters' story.

Where the film was shot in the South West 

Dartmoor, Devon  

The scene every Austen fan will be waiting for: Marianne rescued by Willoughby on the open moor. It was filmed for real on Dartmoor, with crews spotted around Princetown, Tavistock and Gutter Tor. The moor is open to walk today, and Princetown makes an easy base, with pubs, a museum and moorland trails starting right from the village.  

Dorset countryside  

The Dashwoods' new, much humbler home after being pushed out of Norland was built somewhere in the Dorset countryside, chosen for its Jurassic Coast scenery. Georgia Oakley has talked about wanting something "authentically modest" rather than another grand house dressed down to play a cottage, so expect thatch and hedgerows rather than a stately pile. The exact village hasn't been confirmed, so this one's for fans happy to just soak up the county.  

Montacute House, Somerset  

Cleveland, the country estate belonging to the endlessly chatty Mr and Mrs Palmer, is reported to be played by Montacute House, the National Trust's honey-stone Elizabethan showstopper near Yeovil. It's a repeat performance if so, as the house played Cleveland in the 1995 adaptation. The house and gardens are open seasonally, though the upper floors are currently closed as part of a conservation project, so worth checking National Trust's site before planning a visit.  

Outside of its South West prominence 

Knebworth House, Hertfordshire  

In the book, Norland Park, the Dashwood family estate the sisters are forced to leave, sits in Sussex. On screen, it's played by Knebworth House, the Hertfordshire stately home better known for hosting Oasis and Led Zeppelin than Austen. Slightly surreal bonus fact for visitors: the grounds are also home to a dinosaur trail, so it's not the most period-accurate day out, but it is a fun one.  

Rainham Hall, London  

When the sisters head to London for the society scenes, this eighteenth-century merchant's house in the city's east end stands in as Mrs Jennings' home. The National Trust property is running its own exhibition on the film from 26 September to 19 December, so fans can see the rooms the cast worked in as well as the house and walled garden itself.
