A gallery wall is a great way to bring walls to life, and according to the experts at coastal-inspired studio Beach House Art, creating your own is easier than you think.
Brian MacShane, Creative Director of Beach House Art, said: “Looking ahead at a blank space and planning your own, unique gallery wall may seem like a dauting task.
“And while there is no doubt it does take time, planning and a little bit of trial and error, even those without an ounce of creative flair can compile a stunning gallery wall packed with personality.
“And don’t feel you have to finish a gallery wall in one go. Some of the most impactful are curated over months, sometimes years, so never be afraid to start small and build on it.”
Choose a theme
Opting for a common theme for cohesion is the perfect way to create a harmonious gallery wall.
Brian said: “At Beach House Art, we curate sets of prints which have the same vibe, and these are the perfect starter packs around which to build the rest of your gallery wall. Whether you want to go for something botanical with our coral collections, nature-inspired with vintage-esque palm prints or bold with our vibrant shellfish trio, there’s nothing wrong with a little helping hand.”
Mix it up
Different art sizes, frames, styles and textures will bring your gallery wall to life.
Brian said: “You can use just art or add photos, postcards, trinkets and ornaments. Adding different frame styles and sizes adds interest to the room, it really depends on the interior style you’re going for.”
Opt for a colour palette
Creating a colour palette will add a harmonious touch. But as with wall paints, Brian advises homeowners to consider the way the room faces, the current colours in the space and what colours will complement them.
Brian said: “If you have a north facing room, try warmer colours, this will take some of the coolness out of the light in your room.
“If you have a south facing room you can try cooler colours as they will be getting a warm light during the day. If you don’t have much natural light, go for it and go deep! We love using really bold colours in a snug, it can be daunting but pays off if you get it right.”
Where to place a gallery wall
There are many places to consider when choosing where to create your gallery wall.
Brian said: “Whether it’s a small wall, a under-the-stair nook or an expansive living room wall, it really doesn't matter. Any space will work.”
Planning the layout
Lay your selected art on the floor in front of the wall to visualise it. This is important! Play around with the spacing and order of the wall art.
Brian said: “We recommend keeping the spacing between the prints uniform. So work out what that should be, before you start to hang. It takes a while to get it right but it is hugely important.”
