Planting large and luscious trees at home isn’t only for those with vast amounts of outside space. Many tree species thrive in pots and containers, meaning everyone can enjoy the benefits of beautiful branches, with the added ease of container growing! Those who have balconies and patios can also get involved, with a selection of small and dwarf species to choose from.
Patty Willems, PR Manager at elho has shared her top three pot-grown trees to plant this year:
Citrus trees
“Citrus trees, including lemons and oranges, do exceptionally well in pots! These Mediterranean species love the sun, so make sure they’re placed in a bright location that receives at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight. In the summer, citrus trees need watering around once a week and good drainage is important, so they do not become waterlogged. While a bit fussy, citrus plants will reward attentive owners with fragrant white flowers, glossy green leaves, and juicy, tangy fruits!”
Japanese maple
“Japanese maple trees, also known as acers, make a beautiful and ornamental addition to the garden or balcony; the russet colouring and elegance of the leaves make for a great focal point all year round. These deciduous trees are mostly slow growing, so are ideal for growing in well-suited pots. It is recommended to choose a pot that is about double the size of the root system so that it has plenty of space to establish. They are simple to care for, but make sure the pot has sufficient drainage to avoid root damage, and that the soil does not dry out!”
Snowy Mespilus
“Also known as a Juneberry, this deciduous shrub-like tree is a fantastic, decorative option to plant in your pots. In early spring, you can expect elegant blooms of white blossom and abundance of delicious, apple-flavoured berries in the summer. After the summer passes, the leaves turn russet and boast a vibrant autumnal hue. The perfect, small-scale tree for long-lasting colour! These trees are also hardy and tolerable of most conditions, but for best results find a spot with full sun, keep the soil moist and avoid overwatering.”
Perfect pots to pair with…
Sourcing a suitable pot for trees and large plants can be a challenge, but thankfully, elho has introduced two new XXL plant pots to its collection.
The vibia campana round XXL comes in a large, 65cm size and is lightweight, making it an ideal home for trees on balconies, patios and decking. The drainage hole at the base of the pot ensures that the water can move freely through the soil, and any excess is soaked away beneath and back into the ground. The large-capacity plant pot comes in two colourways, including anthracite and terra and a matching saucer is also available to protect the terrace and for extra water supply to the plant.
Alongside the vibia, elho has also introduced a large pot to its greenville collection. The greenville round 55cm pot has a handy integrated saucer, so plants can stay hydrated and happy throughout the year without sitting with soggy roots! Each pot boasts a sleek design, with two natural colourways to choose from including living black and leaf green.
As with all elho products, the new XXL additions are made from 100% recycled plastic and are 100% recyclable.
