Gambian tech entrepreneurs proving home-grown talent is first-class

“In The Gambia, the seeds of colonialism are still, sadly, with us today. We sometimes find that international companies are favoured over Gambian nationals when choosing who to work with. We have been very lucky to secure many high-profile contracts in the country and wider region, but others are not so fortunate”, says Malang Touray, Executive Director of Forté Innovations.

As the smallest mainland African nation, with a population of 2.6 million, The Gambia is often overlooked on the global stage. But Gambians Malang Touray and Alieu Ceesay of Forté Innovations have been making waves in the West African region.

Over the past 5 years, the data solutions company has worked with several key government and private sector institutions in The Gambia, Senegal, and Ivory Coast. Forté Innovations is proud that all their software solutions are 100% Gambian.

They have delivered a variety of administrative systems and applications, so that their clients can use data when designing and implementing policies and strategies. Their vision is an Africa which leverages data-powered decisions to deepen public and private development.

One recent project that Forté Innovations completed was for Les Grands Moulins de Dakar and Les Grands Moulins d’Abidjan, part of Seaboard Overseas and Trading Group, the biggest flour milling group in the West African subregion. Forté developed a game changing system which enabled the organisation to digitise their sales and market intelligence operations, monitor staff field activities and performance in real time, and build a bank of accurate and high-quality business intelligence data. From this work, it’s now possible for Grands Moulins to devise sales and marketing strategies based on quality data.

Alieu Ceesay, Lead Software Engineer at Forté Innovations, adds: “Africa has huge potential to become a respected global partner, but as a continent, we need to recognise that data is a vital part of that journey. And there are other African companies, like Forté, who are doing great work in this field. Development follows from information. Accurate, timely and interactive data can lift Africa out of its current challenges.”
