Christmas decorating for real homes: how to create a festive feel without starting from scratch

You don't need a grand entrance hall or a room-sized tree to make your home feel like Christmas. A smaller tree on a sideboard, a wreath in the hallway or a garland along the staircase can be just as effective, proving that festive decorating can work in all kinds of homes and at different budgets.

And there's no need to buy a whole new set of decorations every year. Adding a few new pieces to decorations you've collected over time can be enough to give your Christmas a fresh feel, while making the most of what you already have.

From statement trees and traditional wreaths to snowy foliage, garlands, baubles and smaller decorations, the 2026 Charles Bentley Christmas collection has something to suit every home, space and budget - whether you're decorating the whole house or simply adding a few festive touches.

Choose a tree that works for your space

The Christmas tree might be the centrepiece, but bigger isn't always better. Choosing a tree that suits the size and shape of the room can make a big difference to how the finished space looks.

For smaller homes and rooms, Charles Bentley's collection includes 2ft and 3ft snowy trees, as well as new 4ft gold and white trees, which can be styled on a sideboard or used in a hallway or bedroom.

For larger spaces, there are 6ft, 7ft and 8ft trees in both green and snowy finishes, with pre-lit options available for those who want to make decorating a little easier. The 7ft Slim Line faux Christmas tree is another option for rooms where floor space is limited, giving you the height of a larger tree without taking up as much room. For those who want the height of a full-sized tree but a narrower profile, the 6ft Pre-Lit Faux Pencil Christmas Tree offers a more streamlined silhouette, while its built-in lights remove the need to add a separate string of lights.

Bring in a few natural festive touches

Once you've chosen your tree, natural-looking details can help build a festive scheme without making everything feel too polished or perfectly matched.

Pinecones, berries and snowy foliage bring texture and a softer, more traditional feel, whether they're used on the tree itself or picked out in other decorations around the home.

Charles Bentley's new wreaths include designs with white berries, pinecones, red bows and bells, while 180cm garlands come in three seasonal designs: white berry, berry and pinecone, and pinecone. There's also a pre-lit garland for adding a little extra sparkle without having to weave lights through the foliage yourself.

These natural details can be used alongside decorations you already own, making it easy to add texture and interest without changing your whole Christmas scheme.

Add festive lighting without the extra effort

Pre-lit decorations are an easy way to add warmth and sparkle without having to work out where to position strings of lights or untangle them each year.

Alongside pre-lit trees, Charles Bentley's collection includes illuminated wreaths and garlands, as well as light-up decorations such as deer and mushroom lights. They can be used to add a soft glow to different areas of the home, from a fireplace or hallway to a sideboard, shelf or window.

Choosing a few pre-lit pieces can also help simplify decorating, particularly when you're looking to add festive lighting without taking on a bigger decorating project.

Look beyond the living room

Christmas decorating doesn't have to stop at the tree. Using a few carefully chosen pieces elsewhere can make the whole home feel festive.

A wreath can bring a festive touch to a hallway or interior wall as well as the front door, while garlands can be draped along staircases, fireplaces, shelves and dining tables. A smaller tree can also work well in a bedroom, hallway or even on a sideboard where a full-sized tree wouldn't fit.

It's often the smaller details in unexpected places that make a home feel properly festive.

Refresh your colour scheme without replacing everything

You don't necessarily need a completely new set of decorations to make your Christmas look different. Introducing one new colour can be enough to give familiar pieces a fresh feel.

Charles Bentley's new blue glass baubles are an easy way to do this. They can be mixed with decorations you already own or used to introduce a new colour scheme, working particularly well alongside white, silver and natural greenery.

A handful of new baubles can be enough to change the look of an existing tree, while repeating the same colour in a few smaller decorations around the room, and home, can help tie the scheme together.

Mix old favourites with new pieces

Christmas decorations don't have to match perfectly to work well together. In fact, combining pieces you've had for years with a few new additions can make a display feel much more personal.

Different sizes, textures and finishes can be layered together, while repeating one or two details - such as berries, pinecones, blue baubles or warm lights - helps everything sit together without looking too coordinated.

That might mean dressing a new tree with decorations you've had for years, adding a new wreath to a familiar hallway or bringing a new garland into a room alongside existing decorations.

It's also a way to let your Christmas collection grow over time rather than replacing it every year. You might add a new colour one year, a wreath the next, or change the size or style of your tree when your home or family changes.

Whether it's a statement tree, a wreath on the door, a garland along the staircase or a few festive touches on a shelf, Charles Bentley's 2026 Christmas collection makes it easy to create a Christmas that works for the space you have - and add to it year after year.
