Woodlands.co.uk is thrilled to celebrate the Isle of Wight Red Squirrel Trust’s latest conservation milestone: the purchase of a second, adjoining woodland to extend the habitat for the island’s endangered red squirrels. This remarkable achievement was made possible by the generosity of supporters, particularly through legacies gifted in wills, showing the enduring impact of community commitment to wildlife preservation.
The newly acquired woodland joins the Trust’s existing site, creating a larger, continuous habitat that promises significant benefits for red squirrels and other native species. While the area is currently wild, featuring fallen and standing dead trees, debris, and no formal paths, the Trust’s small but dedicated volunteer team visits every Sunday morning to carry out essential work, including clearing debris, building a hide, and installing feeders. Helen Butler, founder of the Trust, is documenting these efforts with photos of the evolving woodland.
“We are so grateful for every donation and legacy that makes our work possible,” said Helen Butler. “By joining these two woodlands, we’re not just expanding space, we’re creating a safer, richer environment where red squirrels can thrive.”
The Trust has already begun planting new trees and shrubs to enhance food sources and biodiversity. Recent additions include hazel, sweet chestnut, crab apple, and wild cherry, replacing a previous western red cedar crop, to better support the local wildlife. As the habitat improves, the Trust expects red squirrel populations to increase, further securing the species’ future on the island.
Red squirrels are an important native species in the UK, playing a key role in forest health by helping disperse seeds and promoting woodland regeneration. Their presence also supports biodiversity, as they rely on and contribute to complex ecosystems. However, red squirrels are threatened by competition from the non-native grey squirrel, which outcompetes them for food and carries a virus (squirrel pox) that is harmless to greys but often fatal to reds, making conservation efforts especially urgent.
Dan Sharp, Local Manager at Woodlands.co.uk, commented: “Watching the Isle of Wight Red Squirrel Trust expand their conservation efforts is truly inspiring. This joined woodland will provide a safe haven for wildlife for generations to come, and it demonstrates how committed individuals and communities can make a real difference for nature.”
The Isle of Wight Red Squirrel Trust continues to welcome support for its woodland projects and conservation work. Every contribution helps protect the island’s iconic red squirrels and ensures that their natural habitat remains secure.
