Dog owners should lap up what’s on offer at the iconic Grasmere Sports and Lakeland Show this year, whether they want to view the honed skills of particular breeds, watch their dog trying to emulate others, or see their child scoop a ‘young dog handler’ prize.
The Cumbrian-based show, set against the stunning backdrop of the Lakeland fells close to the poet Wordsworth’s beloved Grasmere, is back with a vengeance after two years of enforced cancellation and ready to attract visitors wanting a great day out at a truly dog-friendly event.
One thing all appreciative dog owners will love is the sight of hounds taking to the Lake District’s dramatic and breathtaking fell sides, following aniseed trails that will lead them from start to finish and back into the arms of their owners, with a prize for the fastest one to do it. This is a spectacle and experience not to be missed and one that truly encapsulates the essence of traditional rural life in the Lake District. Full of colour, noise, baying, clanking of metal to bring dogs home and furious barking, it’s everything a dog lover could want.
Then there is the Little Nippers terrier display in the arena, in which terriers chase a lure to the excited encouragement of the crowd, with all observers having chosen their own personal favourite doggy competitor. That’s just the first ‘course’ of this event, because then your own dog can enter the ring and become a have-a-go hero (or show total disinterest, as the case may be!). It’s well worthy of a bit of video footage, whatever their reaction!
There is also a fun dog show for owners who adore their dogs and think they have the bow-wow factor and the opportunity for one child dog handler to be awarded a very special prize as part of this. If your child is totally inseparable from your own pooch, you might want to see their special bond potentially rewarded in this way.
With stalls to peruse with your canine, lots of entertainment, the chance to watch iconic Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling, or have a go at riding all manner of types of bicycle, plus all the joy of drinking in traditions like the bell man’s opening of the event and the singing of the national anthem in the glorious Cumbrian countryside, there’s little more you and your dog could want from a day out. Or maybe a hotdog or two would just top it off?
