Enjoy an idyllic Christmas in a castle, escaping all of the festive stress and hassle and relishing some escapism as you live out life as a prince or princess for a few days and feast on 2 AA Rosette food.
Christmas is completely ‘sorted’, if you head to award-winning Langley Castle Hotel in Northumberland, a medieval gem brimming with authentic features and keeping it ‘real’ as an English castle hotel.
You can discover this for yourself over the course of a two-day or three-day break, according to how long you wish to be pampered and waited on by the castle’s friendly, local staff. All will welcome you on December 24, when there will be cocktails by evening, to get you in the Christmas mood.
On December 25, you will be treated to a full Northumbrian breakfast but you may not wish to tuck in too much, as a sumptuous Christmas lunch awaits. Luckily, Langley is set in a 10-acre woodland estate in which you can walk off the pud. Being so closely located to Hadrian’s Wall also makes a stroll along part of the UNESCO World Heritage site a great option.
By evening, if you happen to feel peckish, you can take advantage of a Christmas Day hot and cold buffet, before you spend the evening perhaps in one of the window seat nooks set into the seven-feet-thick walls or curl up before the Drawing Room’s roaring log fire.
If enjoying a two-night break, you will be treated to another Northumbrian breakfast on December 26 (Boxing Day), before saying farewell to the hospitable team. If you have booked a three-day break, you can spend the day at leisure, perhaps exploring wider Northumberland, before returning for a three-course dinner in the 2 AA Rosette, candlelit and atmospheric Josephine restaurant.
Where you choose to rest your head is down to you. You could opt for the full castle feel and book a room inside the castle, perhaps in a four-poster bed, or decide you want more contemporary Castle View or Castle Lodge accommodation, so the castle is what you see whenever you leave the room. Either way, you can spend plenty of time inside Langley Castle, enjoying the ambience created by chandeliers, knights in shining armour and medieval-inspired décor.
Prices for a two-day Christmas castle break, inclusive of all meals, start at £505 per person, in a Castle Lodge room, and go up to £700 per person for a Feature Castle Room. In-between, there are options for a Deluxe Castle Room, Castle View Suite, Castle View Superior or Standard Castle View room.
Prices for a three-day break start at £641 per person and rise to £933 per person, on the same basis and with the same in-between options available. All prices are on the basis of two people sharing a double room. A single person supplement applies, if that is not the case.
With so much to see and do locally during your free time, there is no chance of being bored, whether you walk, explore local towns like Hexham, with its medieval Abbey, or drive further, heading to Kielder Forest, Roman Corbridge, Newcastle or the Northumberland coast.
Of course, if you just want to chill, you can have an idyllic Christmas break, experiencing the unique thrill of opening your presents in a truly special castle venue, imagining how the original owners would have spent Christmas Day in 1350.
Christmas breaks should be booked by phone, so call the Langley Castle team on 01434 688888. More information is at www.langleycastle.co.uk

Langley Castle, built in 1350, is located in Langley-on-Tyne, Northumberland and is one of the few authentic, fortified medieval castles in England. It has a rich history, with strong links to Jacobite rebellions, is located just a stone's throw from the World Heritage Site of Hadrian's Wall and boasts features including battlements, seven-feet-thick walls, window seats set into the walls and the best example of medieval garderobes in Europe. It is one of the most exquisite wedding venues in the north and also offers a wide range of options when it comes to exclusive use, with the castle being available for weddings, family celebrations, Bar Mitzvahs and Bat Mitzvahs, D&D-style events and a wide variety of corporate functions.
