Participate in a meaningful ride on July 3rd to commemorate Jim Woods and support vital brain tumour research and support services.

On the 3rd of July, the third annual Jim Woods Memorial Ride will take place in honour of Jim Woods, a devoted club cyclist who joined Alton Cycling Club (ACC) in 2010 after returning from France. Tragically, Jim was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour in September 2018 and passed away in April 2020. Jim was known for his love of cycle touring, Sunday club rides, and social events. He is fondly remembered by his family and friends for his gentle humour and sharp intellect.

To honour Jim’s memory and support a noble cause, all profits from this event will be donated to brainstrust, a charity dedicated to assisting brain tumour sufferers. Additionally, Alton Cycling Club will make a donation to augment the funds raised. Last year, 86 people joined the ride and raised £1,000 for brainstrust. This year, the aim is to surpass that number to raise even more awareness and funds for this important cause.

John Health, fundraiser organiser and a close friend of Jim, shares his thoughts: “Jim was a good friend who is sorely missed by me and all his many friends and family. I rode with him often, including annual tours in France with a group of other like-minded friends. I wanted to do something to commemorate his life and, although COVID delayed things, I was very pleased to be able to initiate the Jim Woods Memorial Ride in 2022. Raising money for brainstrust was suggested by Jim’s wife Wendy – it is a charity that gave them much support and comfort during Jim’s illness.”

Will Jones, CEO of brainstrust, adds: “We are incredibly grateful to the Alton Cycling Club and all the participants of the Jim Woods Memorial Ride for their support. Events like these are vital in helping us provide the resources and care needed for those affected by brain tumours. Jim’s legacy continues to inspire us, and this memorial ride not only honours his memory but also brings hope and assistance to countless others. Together, we can make a significant difference in the lives of brain tumour patients and their families.”

The ride will start and finish in Beech, near Alton, passing through some of Hampshire’s most scenic and tranquil countryside. Riders will traverse the Itchen Valley, Test Valley, and Dever Valley, mostly on quiet B roads and country lanes. There will be a manned control at Longstock Park on the John Lewis/Waitrose estate, offering ample seating indoors and out.

If you are interesting in taking part in this ride through Hampshire countryside and help to honour Jim Woods while supporting a cause that touches so many lives. Whether you’re an avid cyclist or simply want to be part of this meaningful event, participation and support are invaluable.
