Vet app Joii Pet Care’s annual report also highlighted the most common pet symptoms

Milo clinched the top spot for male dog names chosen in 2022, overtaking Teddy and Alfie to become the most popular moniker for the first time in two years. Meanwhile, Milo and Luna remained at the top of the list of cat names for the third consecutive year.

Data from pet registrations for veterinary care app Joii Pet Care during 2022 has revealed the top five names for cats and dogs in the UK. Overall, there has been little movement, suggesting the pet-owning public are traditional and consistent with their pet name choices. However, some notable trends and changes include:

  • The top spot for male dog names has been the only one to fluctuate over a three-year period;
  • Charlie no longer featured as a top name for male dogs, being replaced by Max in 2021 and 2022;
  • Leo entered the list of top male cat names for the first time in three years, taking the place of Oscar;
  • Willow appeared as a top female cat name for the first time, while Lola re-entered for the first time since 2020. Daisy and Poppy dropped out of the top five list.
  • The list of female dog names remained the same, but with a switch in positions for Lola and Poppy.

Delving deeper into name choices by geography across the UK, Bella and Luna were the top names registered in England and Scotland respectively; while Milo was the top of the list for Wales and Northern Ireland. Luna was the most popular cat name for England and Wales, while Willow and Bella came first for Northern Ireland and Scotland respectively.

Demand for vet services is continuing to increase as the nation continues to welcome new pets into their homes. During 2022, Joii Pet Care reported double-digit growth to its virtual vet and vet nurse consultations when compared to 2021. The platform reached 300,000 pet registrations in 2022.

The Joii app offers pet owners affordable and convenient access to remote consultations with registered vets and nurses 24/7, via their smartphones. It also has a free symptom checker and the latest technology to diagnose pets from the comfort of their home - reducing any stress for the animal and providing convenience for owners.

Throughout the year, Joii’s team of vets and nurses delivered an increased amount of virtual vet care for pet parents, plus there was a 35% increase in customers completing the app’s free symptom checker to get personalised treatment recommendations. According to Joii’s symptom checker, the most common symptoms during 2022 were: -

  1. Diarrhoea
  2. Ears
  3. Off food
  4. Vomiting
  5. Eye problems

Vet Dr Samantha Webster of Joii Pet Care said: “2022 was tremendously busy and we’re really pleased to be able to offer a ‘111’ service 24/7 for pet owners right across the UK, providing a listening, supportive and professional service for pet owners. It’s interesting to see that name choices are pretty consistent. We also believe that consistency in accessing good quality vet care is the key to happy and healthy pets. It’s important for the future of healthcare that pet owners have a choice of accessible and affordable veterinary care to help them deal with a range of conditions, especially as ownership continues to rise and so does the cost of living.”

Joii Pet Care was launched in 2019 by experienced vets Robert Dawson and Sarah Warren, and tech entrepreneur Paul Hallett. It was built by a team of experts using cutting-edge technology and developed to tackle the rising costs of vet care.

Editors notes

Founded in early 2017 by tech expert Paul Hallett and experienced veterinarian Robert Dawson, Vet-AI is an R&D company developing a number of solutions that focus on supporting pets, vets and giving pet parents the tools to access care more affordably and conveniently when their pets need it most.

The company’s flagship brand Joii is set to launch in April 2019. Built by a team of experts with cutting-edge, bespoke technology, Joii is an app for pet parents to diagnose and receive recommended treatment for pets from the comfort of their home. Dedicated to improving and updating the animal health industry in-line with some of the ground-breaking innovations seen in human health, Paul approached one of the largest animal health companies in the UK and met his business partner, Robert Dawson.

The founders spent 18 months researching and understanding what pet parents’ needs are, and what technology is currently available for pet diagnosis. The more research Paul and Robert carried out, the more exciting their idea became.

Investors in people, the co-founders have built a team of industry experts including vets, PhD level data scientists, and technology programmers. The team consists of OBE award-winning entrepreneur Jonathan Sands alongside chief data scientist Trevor Hardcastle, a renowned computational solid-state physicist and frequent presenter at international conferences with 19 published papers to his name. Also joining the company is one of the most highly regarded veterinary dermatologists in the UK, Sarah Warren, former head of AI at push doctor Josh Sephton, and Monocle- and Forbes-featured designer Guy Buchan. With more than £500,000 investment from co-founder Robert, £100,000 investment from law firm Lupton Fawcett and £175,000 from award-winning design studio Elmwood, the firm will be seeking further investment in 2019 to support its continued growth. The firm, which launched in the UK in 2019, has its sights set on going global; Australia and the US next, followed by Europe and Asia. It has already received recognition across the UK, reaching the final in Tech Nation’s Rising Star awards and nominated for ‘Innovation’ and ‘Newcomer’ in the upcoming Yorkshire Business Masters awards. The company plans to partner with charities in the near future, with animal welfare at the forefront of Vet AI. Co-founders Paul and Robert are keen to donate part of the firm's profits to mental health and animal welfare organisations. Paul and Robert are looking to employ another 30 people in 2019 and are set on continually developing the company's AI technology to automate diagnosis, improve healthcare, and enhance how our pets live.
