Castle Makes Bucket List Ticking Easy for Greater London’s Roman-obsessed Men

Langley Castle Hotel is urging Brits to get their bucket list sorted out, especially if they are one of the men who thinks about the Roman Empire weekly, daily or even three times a day, according to Tik Tok interviews.

This comes after the hotel, located in Langley-on-Tyne close to Haydon Bridge, commissioned independent research that found that 27% of men and 45% of women – 36% of Brits overall – have never seen Hadrian’s Wall.

Despite having way fewer people who have never seen Hadrian’s Wall than some regions, 29% of people in Greater London – not far off one-in-three - have never ventured in the footsteps of the Romans at this UNESCO World Heritage site.

The region with the fewest proportion of people who have visited is the South West (53%), followed by Wales (48%) and East Anglia (43%).

Langley Castle makes it easy for bucket listers to overcome this. It is firstly located under 20 minutes away from a host of Roman sites on the Wall, including Roman Vindolanda, Housesteads Fort, Chesters Roman Fort and Cawfields. It takes less than ten minutes more to reach the Roman Army Museum and Birdoswald.

It also explodes the myth that you have to be a keen walker or hiker and walk the 73-mile Wall to enjoy it. By working with local historic interpreters, Ancient Britain, Langley Castle allows guests to be picked up from the hotel door and driven to a number of different Roman sites, where just gentle walking is required. The number will depend on whether a guest books a two-hour, half-day or full-day tour.

During this tour, the Roman landscape is vibrantly brought to life, whether that is through holding Roman weapons or armour, hearing about daily life around Hadrian’s Wall and what people did, ate and worshipped or through seeing the terrain through the costumed guides’ eyes.

Once back at Langley Castle, the medieval property, built in 1350 and felt to have more authentic features than any other English hotel of its era, treats guests to more history. All can enjoy a hugely popular daily Battlements Tour and even spot Hadrian’s Wall from the castle roof, as the castle’s rich history is conveyed.

Then, it can help guests from Greater London tick off more bucket list wishes, having discovered that 18% have never slept in a four-poster bed, as found in its Feature and Deluxe castle rooms, and 26% have never stayed in an authentic castle hotel.

Langley Castle’s General Manager, Craig Healey, says, “If men are thinking about Romans as regularly as they declare that they are, they need to see the greatest evidence of the Roman occupation in Britain for themselves and take a deep dive into Roman history.

“We’re urging people to put things right and put Hadrian’s Wall on their bucket list. We’re making it super-easy for them to get the most of the experience, through our tours in conjunction with Ancient Britain.”
