With news of some sunnier Bank Holiday weather on the horizon, a south Lakes visitor attraction may finally be able to make the very most of one of its newest attractions – one ideally placed to cool visitors down in a truly absorbing way.
The Lakeland Maze Farm Park, in Sedgwick near Kendal, introduced a Water Wars feature at the start of this summer season, but with all the rain we have endured in July and August, has not been able to see visitors fully enjoy getting soaked in battle and then dry off in the sun.
Water Wars involves firing water-filled balloons at opponents, from two different battle stations. With the battle this summer mainly having been the weather, it’s only now that this feature can really achieve full popularity.
Should any unexpected heatwave occur, the Lakeland Maze Farm Park is also ready to swing into action with some sun cream for more delicately skinned farm creatures and lots of cooling treats for others. The farm is home to alpacas, llamas, goats , cows, chickens, pigs, sheep, small rodents, chickens, and a Huarizo (an alpaca/llama cross) called Wally.
If the mercury does rise, there could also be an opportunity for the cooler treats to be given to the animals by visitors, as part of the animal feeding activities.
Warmer weather would also finally allow visitors to explore this year’s main and mini mazes in the climatic conditions that maze explorers are typically used to in summer. Water supplies should be onboarded by those steaming into the steam-train themed main maze, which can take 60-90 minutes to complete, but there is always the mini maze, if it gets too hot. This takes up to 25 minutes and is this year shaped like a station master’s pocket watch.
“Although all of our wet weather activities at the park have really had their place in the sun this year, due to continuous rain, it will be fun to see more people outdoor, enjoying attractions such as the 150-foot long Super Mega Ride n Slide, the giant pillow Air Bouncers, outdoor karts and giant draughts,” says the park’s owner, Graham Wadsworth.
“Having visitors be able to enjoy their picnics outdoors, rather than in our indoor picnic area would also make us much happier, whilst operating our tractor and trailer ride in better weather conditions would be nice to do, to see more smiles on faces. Let’s hope the talk of hotter, sunnier weather is the reality.”
The Lakeland Maze Farm Park has a chance to make the most of any Indian summer that should come along, staying open at weekends right through until October 29 and open daily before that, until September 5. It will also be open every day during the Cumbrian October half term.
With its 10am to 5pm opening, it will be able to offer a full day out on any sunny days on the horizon. Entry to the maze costs £12.45 for adults and children but admission is cheaper if purchased online in advance, priced at £11.45. There are discounts for seniors and carers and children under two years old are free. Head to www.lakelandmaze.co.uk

The Lakeland Maze Farm Park is located at the gateway to the Lake District, in the village of Sedgwick near Kendal, just a few minutes drive from the M6 junction 32. Since opening in 2004, it has twice been awarded the Maze of the Year title, for its annual maize maze - spread over 8 acres and cut into 8-foot-high maize - and its min-maze. However, the park is much more than just the mazes, with animal petting, feeding and demonstrations, a daily tractor and trailer ride, Air Bouncer pillows, wooden panel maze, Water Wars water battle attraction, a 150-foot Super Mega Slice n Ride slide, karts, climbing wall, bouncy castle, indoor play area, outdoor ball game area, coin-operated quad bikes, vintage tractors and much more. Families can bring picnics and enjoy those indoors or outdoors.
