Cobra Garden Machinery shares expert tips to protect lawns from waterlogging

Following weeks of heavy rainfall across much of the UK, Cobra Garden Machinery is offering expert advice on how to care for waterlogged lawns. Saturated ground can quickly lead to compacted soil, root damage and poor spring growth if handled incorrectly. Cobra’s experts are addressing common lawncare myths and explaining what homeowners should - and shouldn’t - do to protect grass during prolonged wet weather.

Waterlogged lawns myths vs facts

Myth: Walking on a wet lawn won’t cause any real harm

Fact: Waterlogged soil is easily compacted. Foot traffic compresses the ground, restricting air and drainage and weakening grass roots.

Myth: Rolling or flattening a soggy lawn will improve its appearance

Fact: Rolling wet lawns worsens compaction and can cause long-term drainage problems.

Myth: Standing water should be dealt with immediately

Fact: If possible, allow water to drain naturally. Forcing water away or disturbing saturated soil can damage turf and root structure.

Myth: Muddy patches mean the lawn needs more attention

Fact: In wet conditions, less intervention is usually better. Leaving lawns alone reduces compaction and allows grass to recover once conditions improve.

Myth: There’s nothing useful gardeners can do during prolonged wet weather

Fact: Wet spells are a good time to check and maintain equipment, clean machinery, and plan lawncare for drier conditions in spring.

“When lawns are waterlogged, the biggest risk comes from disturbance rather than neglect,” says Peter Chaloner, Managing Director at Cobra Garden Machinery. “Avoid compacting wet soil, allow drainage to happen naturally, and focus on maintaining your equipment while conditions improve. These small decisions make a big difference to how lawns recover.”
