Fluted Finishes and Made-to-Measure Details Define the New Season

The cost of living and a longing for craftsmanship is pushing homeowners to invest in quality fixtures that exude a sense of stability as we move into the colder months.

That’s according to the experts at made-to-measure interiors brand Cut My, who say homeowners are looking to invest in their existing homes rather than moving, which means more considered, longer-lasting material choices rather than fast decor fixes.

And it’s texture, not colour, that is leading the way, with fluted surfaces and tactile wall finishes being favoured over bold colour statements.

James Bryant, Founder of Cut My, said: “A few drivers are coming together to influence autumn trends. The cost of living and a real appetite for quality craftsmanship means homeowners are investing in upgrades that feel timeless and long-lasting.

“Homeowners want surfaces that look like they were always there. Made-to-measure materials fit naturally into this because they allow precise, built-in results without trade-level budgets. We're also seeing sustainability shape material choice; customers are actively asking about longevity and surface durability when they order.”

Adding to the sense of permanence, homeowners and renters alike are also looking for bespoke features including built-in alcoves and integrated shelving. And it’s not just living spaces and bedrooms getting all the attention, functional rooms such as home offices and utility spaces are also getting the made-to-measure treatment.

James added: “Boot rooms, utility spaces and home offices are being designed with the same intent as kitchens and living spaces. Practical materials, including wipe-clean panels and robust shelving, are being redesigned with genuinely beautiful finishes.”

While colour isn’t leading the change, James thinks muted shades of terracotta and clay will emerge this autumn as popular hues for living spaces, while off-white and greige will remain strong in the kitchen.

Deep greens will bring impact to panelling while burnt umber and tobacco will start to appear in accent pieces and shelving, offering a richer, warmer alternative to the grey-brown palette that dominated the last few years.

James added: “Homeowners are becoming far more considered in the way they approach interiors. Rather than investing in quick fads that can date within a season, they are looking for changes that will stand the test of time – both in terms of style and quality. That means choosing durable materials, thoughtful finishes and made-to-measure details that feel personal to the home, rather than off-the-shelf.

“A bespoke finish not only elevates the overall look, it also gives homeowners confidence that their investment will continue to feel relevant and beautifully crafted for decades to come.”
