One of the most activity-packed outdoor family days out of the summer returns on August 28, 2022 (Bank Holiday Sunday, as the Grasmere Lakeland Sports and Show, prepares to make its 172nd year’s event one of the very best, to make up for lost time over the past two years.

Children of all ages have something to watch, hear and do at this event, making it a mum and dad’s dream day out. Older children may well be enthralled by the traditional Lakeland sports of fell running and Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling – sports they may never ever have seen before. It will be hard for them to take their eyes off those taking part in the Fell (Guides) races, as the competitors race their way up 295 metres of stunning Lakeland fellside.

Equally, kids will be enthralled by the traditional Lakeland wrestling contests, particularly those involving under-10s, who will be competing in a world championship!

Kids can also let off steam in sack, egg-and-spoon and track races, whilst budding Greg Rutherfords will be able to take on the ‘long leap’ long jump competition.

Those children who love to ride their bike can try out a whole range of different ones at the Wonder Wheelers display and there’s something for all ages, from a toddler’s balance bike, to a Penny Farthing, a unicycle and even a bike that pedals backwards!

If your child is inseparable from their dog, they may just have what it takes to scoop a child handler’s prize in the fun dog show. They will also love the huge fun and noise associated with the stunning spectacle of the event’s hound trails and may well be hankering to let their canine pal have a go in the terrier racing ring, once the ‘Little Nippers’ terrier display has run. At that point, they can see whether their dog has picked up on how to get involved in some fun racing action, having watched the terriers do their thing.

Nature-loving kids will relish the falcon aerial displays and the chance to meet falcons up close and personal, when not in flight.

There’s also lots of colour and noise to keep the family amused, from the razzmatazz of the Fat Cat Brass Band and their stilt-walking drummers to the larger-than-life Bellman’s dramatic ringing of the bell that opens the event.

And, there will also be lots of kid-friendly food available from the food stalls, not to mention a pint from the Grasmere Brewery for parents or aunties and uncles, grandads and grandmas who have all decided this family day out is one not to be missed.

The event takes place on The Showfield, at Stock Lane, Grasmere, just off the A591 between Ambleside and Keswick in the Lake District.

Discounted advance tickets, including a family ticket, are exclusively available online. Early bird tickets are available via the website, costing £11 for adults, £5 for children (aged 5 to 14.) and £28 for a family (two adults and two children). The show opens from 10am and closes at 5pm. Head to www.grasmeresports.com to find out more.
