As we approach the summer months, many people are beginning to spend more time outside in the garden, enjoying the sights of summer sunshine and creating a bright, colourful outdoor space.
It’s never too late in the season to continue adding pops of colour to the garden with beautiful blooms. Below, Hillier shares its top five plants to create instant impact in any garden this summer.

Lavender is a popular favourite in many gardens and Lavandula angustifolia ‘Mellisa Lilac’ is a fantastic choice for adding a pop of colour. This hardy, evergreen shrub is highly attractive to bees and butterflies, producing large, fragrant lilac flowers in the late summer, and a dense mound of aromatic grey-green leaves. Suitable for borders or patio pots, this Lavandula angustifolia will grow to around 0.6 metres high and spread 0.7 metres providing excellent coverage.
Create a Mediterranean-inspired garden with Agapanthus ‘Ever White’. This evergreen perennial produces beautiful upright stems of pure white trumpet-shaped flowers that repeatedly bloom from summer through to autumn. Perfect when dotted in beds and borders or in a container, Agapanthus is a real ‘must have’ for any style of garden reaching a height and spread of 0.6 metres.
Add a burst of blue to the garden with a Salvia nemorosa ‘Blue Bouquetta’. Its upright spikes of blue-purple flowers are produced from early to mid summer, continuously blooming when deadheaded. This hardy perennial looks beautiful in borders and patio pots and is a favourite with bees. Positioned in well-draining soil in a sunny spot, the Salvia will grow to a height and spread of 0.3 metres.
Introduce a colourful and delicate element to the garden with Dianthus ‘Tequila Sunrise’. This delightful plant produces clouds of fuchsia pink fragrant flowers throughout summer, making it a fantastic addition to the garden. As a compact plant, this mound-forming evergreen-perennial is ideal for planting at the front of borders, in rock or gravel gardens and is perfect for containers.
Flowering from early summer to early autumn Geraniums are perfect for adding instant colour to the garden. Geranium ‘Rozanne’ is a stunning plant with deep violet-blue flowers with white centres and maroon veins. Perfect for mixed borders, this geranium will spread to 1 metre and grow to a height of 0.6 metres, in a full sun location.

Hillier is the most successful exhibitor in the history of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, having been awarded 74 consecutive gold medals.
