Nemasys Biological Fruit and Vegetable Protection: The ultimate defence against garden pests

Read Time: 3 mins

·       Nemasys Biological Fruit and Veg Protection is an effective, organic-gardening compatible control that defends against a broad range of garden pests, including carrot and cabbage root fly, cutworms, onion fly, sciarid fly, caterpillars, gooseberry sawfly, thrips, shore fly and codling moth.

The mild and wet UK weather is bringing misery to gardeners and allotmenteers, not only limiting their time outdoors to tend to their precious patches, but it has also encouraged an influx in plant sabotaging pests to take up refuge. The battle against these troublesome creatures can be disheartening, but thankfully there is a biological solution to safeguard your plants this growing season.

Each pack of Nemasys Biological Fruit and Veg Protection contains a selection of nematode species, each bred to target a specific pest. With around ten million individual nematodes in each pack, this is the ultimate ‘all-rounder,’ for garden protection. These mighty nematodes work tirelessly to protect your garden against eleven of the most common pesky pests, including cabbage and carrot root fly, onion fly, sciarid fly, box caterpillar, cutworms, shore fly, leatherjackets, gooseberry sawfly and thrips.

Contrary to its name, Nemasys Fruit and Veg Protection can also be applied to flowers, plants and ornamentals, as well as edible crops. This means that your roses can stay rid of sawfly and dahlias remain thrip free while your carrots, cabbage and onions also thrive without pest damage – all from one product!

Nematodes are microscopic worms that are naturally found in the soil, but by introducing more of these pest-banishing creatures, plants can be safeguarded and protected from harm. Nematodes only infect and kill its intended prey, so wider wildlife, pets and people will not be affected by them. What’s more, Nemasys Biological Fruit and Veg Protection can be used on home-grown produce with confidence as they leave behind no harmful residues, and produce can simply be rinsed with water before eating, making it a great method of pest control on the allotment or vegetable patch.

Applying the nematodes is simple, if applying to soil, make sure that it is moist and above 10 degrees centigrade, for foliar applications such as on tree or hedge leaves to treat caterpillars and thrip, the air temperature should be above 12 degrees centigrade for best results. Nemasys Fruit and Veg Protection is best applied in the evening when the UV strength is low, this is due to the nematodes’ sensitivity to UV which can kill them or reduce efficacy.

Following the instructions on the sleeve, create a stock solution and pour into a watering can using a wide course rose, or using a sprayer with a 0.5mm or more aperture nozzle. After application, thoroughly water the soil to wash the nematodes deeper into the ground and make sure to keep the soil moist and well-watered for up to two weeks afterwards. Reapplication can vary depending on the pest you are treating, always make sure to read the label for best results.
