The Grasmere Lakeland Sports and Show returns on August 28, 2022 (Bank Holiday Sunday) and organisers are calling on locals to get in to the spirit of the event by taking part in a new friendly Wheelbarrow Garden competition.
All ages are encouraged to join in on a fun, green-fingered challenge, for the chance to win. To enter people can just plant up a gardening-themed wheelbarrow and bring it along to the show to be judged and be in contention for the top prize of £25.
This is the perfect opportunity for green-fingered and creative folk to use their imagination, whether they try to make a miniature 'Chelsea' Show Garden or perhaps a miniature Grasmere Sports showground in a barrow. They could just go for colour, or opt for unusual plants. Maybe the kids would like to depict their favourite TV show? Anything goes, but it should be bright, stand-out and fun.
The Show is also encouraging light-hearted competition between family members, but says that any winner should really be generous and share their prize with their family.
All of this is new for Grasmere Lakeland Sports and Show, now in its 172nd year. The show has been greatly missed, after a two-year pause during the COVID pandemic. It will continue to take place on The Showfield, at Stock Lane, Grasmere, just off the A591 between Ambleside and Keswick and cannot wait to welcome locals – and their wheelbarrows – back!
Alongside all the barrows, all the firm favourites are on the itinerary - Cumberland and Westmorland Wrestling, Fell Running and the Hounds Trails. Add to this a huge programme of activities and attractions, including Ridgeside Falconry and its 15-20 different birds of prey from around the world performing in flying displays, a Fell Gather Roadshow talking all things Herdwick and the Fat Cat Brass Band, including their stilt-walking drummers and it will be a real feast for eyes and ears.
“Whether you're a regular competitor in the sports or a family looking for a fun-fuelled day out, this year's show is not to be missed,” says the show manager, Deborah Black. “Bring along a wheelbarrow that wows and you could also grab an unexpected prize. All Tracy Islands will be very welcome!”
To mark the show's return, discounted advance tickets, including a family ticket, are exclusively available online. Adult tickets cost £11, children’s £5 (for ages 5 to 14) and family tickets £28. Head to www.grasmeresports.com to find out more.
