On 24th May 2025, Canvas Gallery in Winchester will host a special art exhibition displaying photographs of David Bowie, taken by his lifelong friend and backing vocalist, Geoff MacCormack.

The exhibition, ‘Canvas to Canvas’– a play on Bowie’s ‘Station to Station’ album – will run until 31st May. More than 25 candid images of the legendary musician will be on display, captured between 1973 and 1976. The exhibition is one of only 10 of its kind held across the world, including intimate venues in the UK, Los Angeles, and Russia.

Geoff MacCormack met Bowie at school in Bromley, London when the pair were just eight years old. After forging a close friendship, Geoff went on to join Bowie on tour as backing vocalist, percussionist, and dancer, while recording on six of his albums and co-writing music.

Geoff commented: “These photos are a wonderful way to remember David. As one of his closest friends, he gave me an attitude in these shots that a professional photographer wouldn’t get. They’re real, honest, and mark some of the most iconic moments of his career.

“Back then, you couldn’t simply take an abundance of photos and dispose of them, like today’s technology allows. It was an expensive process, getting photos developed and printed, so I was selective with the photos I took. I was very fortunate that David trusted me to capture and share his personal story.”

The beautifully photographed images displayed at Canvas Gallery will include various limited-edition prints, all signed by Geoff and some signed by David Bowie, as well as two silkscreen prints by British American artist, Russell Young. All prints will be available to purchase, with prices ranging from £195 to £2,000 for limited editions. Prices on application for the Bowie signed editions and Russell Young screen prints.

Geoff added: “We’re very exclusive when choosing venues for our exhibitions. These photographs were taken in a private, personal setting for David, so it’s fitting that we display them in intimate venues where they can be truly appreciated.”

As part of the exhibition, Geoff will host a signing on Saturday 24th May 2025 for his book, ‘David Bowie: Rock ‘n’ Roll With Me’; a unique photographic memoir recounting their lifelong friendship.

‘Canvas to Canvas’ is free to attend and will be hosted at Canvas Gallery, 169 High Street, Winchester SO23 9BQ on 24th May 2025, running until 31st May 2025.
