THE BARN REBORN: THE BARN AT THE BOTTLE & GLASS INN OPENS THIS WEEK

The Bottle & Glass Inn, an award-winning restaurant-with-rooms near Henley-on-Thames, is excited to announce the launch of its Barn 2.0. The Barn at The Bottle & Glass Inn will welcome guests from 25 June and will be open seven days a week for coffees, pastries, breakfast, lunch and special event nights. Open fire cooking and local suppliers will continue to feature with burgers and pizzas (including Pizza al Taglio) on the extended menu which will also offer café-style favourites. The relaxed menu will be overseen by Michelin-starred Executive Chef Dom Robinson and visitors can also look forward to a series of open fire feast nights, seasonal suppers and collaborations with local producers.

The stunning space is the final evolution of the original barn, introduced in 2021 as an outside dining option during Covid. The disused Dutch barn, open to the elements and sitting across the courtyard from the picture-perfect Grade II-listed Bottle & Glass Inn, became a lifeline during those difficult months. Over the last three years, there’s been many enhancements made, but a nine-month hiatus has allowed for a total redevelopment and the result is pretty special.

The Barn’s rustic and agricultural feel has been maintained, with much of the original materials repurposed. The Barn’s old, patinated corrugated iron roof has been retained, but above this sits a custom-made insulated roof. Black weatherboarding covers the walls and is in keeping with the rest of the site, while polished concrete flooring adds a modern and fuss-free touch. The open sides have been replaced with enormous picture windows and three sets of double French doors which take in the picturesque setting looking out across the fields to Bones Wood. Stylish internal toilets are also a welcome addition. The new look makes for the perfect setting for a summer’s day drink, a cosy winter retreat as well as a great venue for celebrations and events, including big birthdays, weddings and corporate away days.

David Holliday, who co-owns The Bottle & Glass Inn with his business partner Alex Sergeant under the Sika Inns brand, comments: “It’s been a rollercoaster of a journey to get to where we are today, and a heroic effort from so many to get The Barn complete and looking so fabulous. We are absolutely thrilled with the result! From the beginning, it was important to keep the agricultural integrity of the barn - the bones, character and charm of original barn that our community fell in love with during Covid are still intact. We wanted to create a warm and welcoming space for everyone. It’s still a laidback, approachable place, perfectly suited to dog walkers, and families and friends with gaggles of kids.”

What’s more, there are plans afoot to add a collection of Shepherd’s Huts to the accommodation offering and to introduce poly tunnels enabling the team to grow its own fruit and vegetables to increase the low mileage produce on the menus.

The picture-perfect Bottle & Glass Inn is a restaurant-with-rooms and more set on the bucolic Phillimore Estate in Binfield Heath near Henley on Thames. It is run by David Holliday and Alex Sergeant, two former general managers of Fulham’s The Harwood Arms - London’s only Michelin-starred pub and makes for a great base for a night away. Within the charming, thatched inn is a traditional English pub with exposed beams and a roaring fire, an award-winning restaurant and three gorgeous rooms. From the Inn’s door there are footpaths through the Estate, or further afield guests might choose to follow sections of the Thames Path to Shiplake, Henley-on-Thames or Sonning. Head to Henley, famous for its annual Royal Regatta, to hire a boat to explore from the river, visit The River & Rowing Museum, try the riverside mini golf course, or enjoy a tour of the Fairmile Vineyard.

Holliday and Sergeant also run the Bottle and Glass’ sister restaurants,

The Hart Street Tavern, in the heart of Henley-on-Thames, and The Stag & Huntsman in the scenic Hambleden Valley.

Price: One night’s B&B at the Bottle & Glass Inn costs from £150. Main courses in the restaurant range between £17-£38, main dishes in The Barn start from £7.
