Moulton College played host to the prestigious SkillBuild competition in May. It’s the first time the college has held the event on its campus since 2010.

Delivered by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), SkillBuild is the UK’s largest multi-trade competition and sees construction trainees and apprentices from across the UK showcase skills from trades such as plumbing, carpentry, and bricklaying.

16 heats are held in different locations around the country, with eight of the highest-scoring competitors for each specialist skill going onto the SkillBuild UK National Final in Edinburgh later this year.

Moulton College opened the doors of its state-of-the-art construction facility on 26th May 2022 for Heat 9 of the competition, welcoming 41 attendees from two training providers and nine Midlands-based colleges.

SkillBuild tests the technical abilities, time management, character, and commitment of competitors and is an opportunity for the CITB to demonstrate the quality and skills of learners and highlight the broad career opportunities on offer in the construction industry.

Rhiannon Hankins, Programme Coordinator for Construction at Moulton College, explains: “It’s our first time hosting SkillBuild for more than a decade. It was a terrific experience and a great opportunity to showcase our fantastic facilities.

“There was so much talent on display, including five of our Moulton College students who took part in the carpentry, bricklaying, and plumbing heats. Our team did brilliantly against some extremely tough competition, and we are so proud of them. It’s our aim at Moulton College to equip our learners with the skills and confidence needed to help them thrive in the world of work. Being able to host and take part in events like SkillBuild is an exciting and rewarding part of that journey.”

Jonathan Chivers, CITB Director of Product Management, adds: “The Regional Qualifiers are a really exciting stage in the SkillBuild competition, as it’s our first glimpse of the huge variety of skills and talent coming through to industry. It is a challenging experience, but CITB is hugely proud of everyone that participates.”

Moulton College runs courses in plumbing, carpentry & joinery, bricklaying, furniture studies, and stonemasonry. For more information, visit https://www.moulton.ac.uk
