"How can you put a price on a family reunited?" That is how one Armed Forces veteran described what recovery from trauma had given him back. PTSD Resolution, the charity providing free mental health treatment for Armed Forces veterans, reservists and their families, has treated its 5,000th client since it was founded in 2009.
Charles Highett, CEO of PTSD Resolution, said: "Five thousand clients represents far more than a number. Behind every referral is someone who has finally decided they no longer have to live with the effects of trauma. Every recovery means a veteran finding hope again, rebuilding relationships they thought were lost, and reclaiming a future they had stopped believing was possible.
"Those benefits do not stop with the individual. They ripple out to partners, children and whole communities. We estimate that more than 15,000 lives have been positively affected by the work of PTSD Resolution."
Trauma rarely stays contained to one person, and the charity's own estimate reflects that. When a veteran recovers, a marriage often steadies, a child gets a more present parent, a household regains stability.
This milestone has not arrived by chance. Over the past two years, working alongside an expanding network of military charities, service organisations and statutory partners, PTSD Resolution has increased the number of people it treats by more than 70%. The charity says it is now on course to treat between 700 and 800 veterans, reservists and family members this year, its busiest year since it was founded.
More than 70% of the charity's clients are now referred by partner organisations, rather than arriving through direct contact. Highett said this reflects something the charity takes seriously: "Other organisations are putting their own reputations behind us when they refer someone into our care. That level of confidence has to be earned, and it is earned session by session, outcome by outcome."
These outcomes are supported by an independent evaluation published in Occupational Medicine in March 2025 (Hall and Greenberg), which assessed 211 veterans and family members treated by the charity. It found that 82% of clients completed their treatment programme, 79% achieved reliable improvement across anxiety and depression measures, and 66% of those presenting with PTSD went on to recover, at an average cost of £910 per client across all treatment.
Treatment is delivered one-to-one through a nationwide network of 200 Human Givens Institute (HGI) therapists, in an average of seven sessions, either locally or remotely by phone and internet.
The growth PTSD Resolution has seen reflects two things happening at once: rising demand for specialist trauma treatment across the Armed Forces community, and a reputation, built over sixteen years, for delivering therapy quickly and backing it up with strong, independently verified clinical outcomes. Together, this has made PTSD Resolution one of the UK's leading independent providers of specialist trauma therapy for veterans, reservists and their families.
The charity is among the few organisations providing treatment for veterans affected by addiction or living overseas, as well as family members, including partners and children aged twelve and over, affected by living with a traumatised veteran. Its TATE programme, Trauma Awareness Training and Education, helps employers recognise the signs of trauma in their own staff and know where to direct them for support.
Five thousand clients is not a finishing line. It is another step towards a simpler goal: making sure that every veteran and family member living with trauma, wherever they are in the country, knows that effective help exists and is free to access.

Treatment is free, effective and delivered promptly and locally through a network of 200 therapists nationwide, and also by phone and the internet. The charity can also work with organisations to help the mental welfare of their veteran staff.
Founded in 2009, the charity is accredited by the Royal College of Psychiatrists to the Quality Network for Veterans Mental Health Services (QNVMHS). It has treated 5,000 clients to date, and delivers therapy in an average of seven sessions, at which point the client and therapist agree that no further therapy is required.
The charity is one of the only organisations to provide therapy to veterans suffering with addiction issues or who are based overseas, as well as to family members, including partners and children, who may experience the symptoms of trauma from living with a traumatised veteran.
PTSD Resolution has a uniquely lean operation, with no salaried staff or assets. Funds are used to deliver therapy and for essential research and public information, at an average cost of £910 per therapy programme, delivered free to clients.

Getting Help from PTSD Resolution: Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How do I know if I or a family member might need support?
A. Trauma from military service can show up in different ways: flashbacks, anger, difficulty sleeping, feeling on edge, or a sense of distance from the people you love. Family members often notice these changes too, sometimes before the veteran does. If any of this sounds familiar, you don't need a formal diagnosis to reach out. PTSD Resolution can talk you through what support looks like, with no pressure and no obligation.
Q. Is the help really free, and will it cost me anything?
A. Yes, treatment is completely free for veterans, reservists and their eligible family members. PTSD Resolution has no salaried staff and relies on donations, so nothing is ever charged to you or your family for therapy.
Q. Do I need to go through my GP or get a diagnosis first?
A. No. You can contact PTSD Resolution directly yourself, or a family member can get in touch on your behalf. There is no need for a referral letter, an assessment, or a diagnosis before reaching out. Call 0300 302 0551 or visit www.ptsdresolution.org to start the conversation.
Q. How quickly will I be seen, and is it confidential?
A. PTSD Resolution aims to arrange a first session within around 12 days of getting in touch, far quicker than many other services. Everything you share is confidential, and sessions can take place locally, face to face, or remotely by phone or video call, whichever feels more comfortable for you.
Q. Can my partner or children get support too, not just the veteran?
A. Yes. Trauma rarely affects only the person who served. Through the FAITH programme, PTSD Resolution supports partners and children aged twelve and over who are living with the effects of a loved one's trauma. You do not have to be a veteran yourself to reach out.
