In Q3 2025, Lagen Island will unveil its reimagined self, following an extensive renovation. Located in the heart of the Philippines in El Nido, Palawan, Lagen Island is a private island resort surrounded by tropical forest and a turquoise blue lagoon. The hotel first opened in 1998 but will soon have a very new look. 

WHAT’S NEW? 

Lagen Island closed its doors in June this year to undergo quite the transformation, and the finished resort will soon have an entirely new look. But what will be new? 

• A brand-new spa known as The Nest (to be finalised): ‘El Nido’ in Spanish means ‘The Nest’, and so it’s fitting that this is the name being given to the island’s brand-new spa. Previously, Lagen Island had just one couple-room for treatments and massages, but as part of the renovation it’ll now provide a place where guests can nurture their mental and physical wellbeing by harmonising with nature and fostering a deep connection between their soul and mother nature. 

The spa will be split across two levels and will feature a Spa Garden and Reflection Pond, a gym, yoga studio, relaxation lounge, watsu pool, hot and cold plunge pools, a steam room and a sauna, as well as three treatment rooms - each of which will have two beds, a bath tub, and a private bathroom. 

• Fewer rooms, but more island: Going against the grain of what you’d expect from an extensive hotel renovation, Lagen Island has actually removed some of its resort. To gain more of a beach, to see more of the impressive limestone cliffs, and to reclaim more of the natural island, El Nido Resorts have removed eight of the guest rooms – there will now be 42 instead of 50. The swimming pool has also been moved to allow for the beach to have more of a spotlight. 

• A new Dive Centre: The new Dive Centre will be inspired by Palawan’s nipa huts – a traditional, indigenous, stilt-style house that is synonymous with the Philippines. The Dive Centre will be more than just a hub for gearing up and for information. It’ll be a vibrant hub where friendships are forged, stories are shared, and adventures are begun. A space where the boundaries between the beach and the indoors blur seamlessly. 

• A state-of-the-art Marine & Biodiversity Discovery Centre: El Nido Resorts are leading the way when it comes to responsible travel and mindful island living, so they’re inviting guests to be a part of this by way of introducing a Marine & Biodiversity Discovery Centre. It’ll be an interactive space where guests – big and small – can learn about the ecosystems that exist not only on Lagen Island but in the Philippines more widely, as well as the underwater world and all that El Nido Resorts are doing to preserve it. 

WHAT IS THERE TO KNOW IN TERMS OF DESIGN? 

More will be revealed soon regarding the transformation of Lagen Island, but what can be promised is that Lagen Island will be an honest representation of Filipino identity. The design will champion native and tribal aesthetics and will fuse the traditions of Palawan and local craftmanship with what Filipino’s consider to be luxury today. 

Filipino’s know luxury, and Lagen Island is it.

WHEN WILL LAGEN ISLAND RE-OPEN? 

It is anticipated that Lagen Island will reopen in Q3 2025.
