Enjoy the family activity that King Charles has openly declared his passion for, by heading to the Lakeland Maze Farm Park, in the English Lake District, this summer.
The King has just opened a maze at Sandringham, to add to two more in Scotland, giving the royal seal of approval to an activity that many of us, lacking royal residences, would have missed out on in childhood.
With the Lakeland Maze Farm Park located in a true holiday hub for British staycationers, there is no excuse not to discover what the King finds so fascinating. With it being less than an hour away from the Lancashire coast and Blackburn, and just over an hour from Bolton and north Manchester, as well as just minutes from M6 junction 36, it also makes a great venue for a day trip or group day out.
Children – and those with the inner child still burning strong - can have fun in the seven-foot-high maize crop, into which a sailing boat-shaped maze has this year been laid out. Navigating your way out will keep you entertained for up to 90 minutes, as you seek out your exit route and avoid encountering dead ends. If you need any help, it’s always at hand.
The magical activity, all done in the fresh air and providing great exercise too, is something the King apparently loves. As he says, “There’s nothing more enjoyable than getting lost in a maze.” Families can discover this for themselves, even if they only tackle the Lakeland Maze Farm Park’s mini-maze, shaped as a medal and taking less than 30 minutes to conquer.
Whilst the royal endorsement for mazes is likely to see many families heading to the park primarily for the chance to discover the joys for themselves, there is also much more to do.
The park has this year installed a fabulous Cresta Run toboggan ride, alongside its Mega Ride n Slide, giant ring slide. More childhood fantasies can be lived out in a real fire engine or by defending one’s station in the Water Wars aquatic battle activity. There are go-karts, Air Bouncers, trampolines, zip wire and panel maze, not to mention bouncy castle, coin-operated quad bikes, Giant Lego, under-3s soft play area, football and games area and much more.
You can picnic, or buy food on-site, and also take advantage of the free tractor and trailer ride that tours the working farm. Saying hello to the animals can be done in the petting barn and around the animal demonstration area, whether you want to get to know cattle, sheep, pigs, ferrets, rodents, alpacas, llamas, goats, ponies and donkeys or even the loveable huarizo.
Lakeland Maze Farm Park is open every day, from 10am to 6pm, to September 3. Weekends-only opening, and daily October half-term opening, then follows.
Admission costs £12.45 per person, if tickets are bought online, with concessions for seniors and carers (£8.45). On the door tickets are priced with a small supplement and under-2s enter for free.
Head to www.lakelandmaze.co.uk to buy tickets for a great value family day out – and a chance to discover why the King loves mazes so much.

The Lakeland Maze Farm Park is located at the gateway to the Lake District, in the village of Sedgwick near Kendal, just a few minutes drive from the M6 junction 32. Since opening in 2004, it has twice been awarded the Maze of the Year title, for its annual maize maze - spread over 8 acres and cut into 8-foot-high maize - and its min-maze. However, the park is much more than just the mazes, with animal petting, feeding and demonstrations, a daily tractor and trailer ride, Air Bouncer pillows, wooden panel maze, Water Wars water battle attraction, a 150-foot Super Mega Slice n Ride slide, karts, climbing wall, bouncy castle, indoor play area, outdoor ball game area, coin-operated quad bikes, vintage tractors and much more. Families can bring picnics and enjoy those indoors or outdoors.
