Shaun the Sheep Augmented Reality Easter Trail at Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens

Read Time: 5 mins

A new 'Hide & Sheep' Easter trail at Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens brings to life the much-loved character Shaun the Sheep, developed by Aardman, the creators of Wallace & Gromit.

Visitors can enjoy the natural beauty of the Grade I Listed woodland gardens as they follow the trail and discover markers along the way, from 25th March until 23rd April. Using a bespoke app, visitors can then reveal Shaun in augmented reality hiding out in a farmyard scene and pose alongside him, capturing their day out to share with family and friends.

Only garden entry and a phone are needed to play, and Leonardslee members can join the event for free. Players can download the ‘Hide & Sheep’ app in advance from the Apple Store or Google Play Store. Markers are located throughout the gardens for guests to find, with each featuring a QR code that can be scanned in order to find Shaun through their phone lens.

Visitors can then take a series of photos with Shaun in a variety of fun animated poses. To finish the trail, players must complete their stamp collection, take photos and create an entertaining, shareable collage of their day with Shaun the Sheep.

"We will also be hosting model making workshops for families to create their own Shaun the Sheep," says Adam Streeter, estate general manager. "It's a delightful day out for children to explore this lovely 240-acre estate and its plant collection and animal life, see the wallabies and deer and visit our famous Beyond the Doll's House exhibition.

"Hide and Sheep is a new addition to our year-round calendar of events, which also includes the hugely popular Leonardslee Illuminated light trail. We are always looking for new and exciting activities for families while also protecting the Grade I listed gardens for future generations, using augmented reality is a fun way to achieve this."

The ‘Hide & Sheep’ trail is from 25th March until 23rd April, and model making workshops on 2nd April. Due to limited phone service, guests are advised to download the app before visiting. Standard entrance fees to Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens apply.

Editors notes

Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens is a West Sussex estate and Sussex Wine vineyard near Horsham that features Grade I Listed woodland gardens.

Visitors can see a magical world in miniature at the Beyond the Doll's House exhibition. It depicts the Edwardian estate and neighbouring villages at 1:12 scale. They can then enjoy a classic afternoon tea in the Grade II Listed mansion house and in the evening dine at Michelin-starred Restaurant Interlude and stay overnight in luxury accommodation.

The 240-acre estate was established by Sir Edmund Loder, the great Victorian plant collector. Set in a valley with seven interlaced lakes, it offers lovely walks through woodlands and parkland. There is a Pulham rock garden, built in 1890, a deer park and a colony of wallabies wandering the estate.

Leonardslee features outstanding displays of rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, magnolias and bluebells. The collection is exceptional in its diversity and maturity, with several rare ‘champion’ trees that are threatened in their natural habitat.

The gardens offer a protected ecosystem for rare wildlife. This includes Emperor Dragonflies and Damselflies, White Admiral and Purple Hairstreak butterflies and migratory and native birds - Kites, Great Tits, Tree Creepers, Nuthatches, Woodpeckers and Nightingales.

Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens offers a great family day out and is open all year round, except Christmas Day. There is an extensive programme of entertainment that includes winter garden illuminations, wine tastings and festivals, photo and art exhibitions, live music events, cooking and gardening demonstrations, arts and crafts fairs, modelling and children’s entertainment.

The estate reopened in April 2019, following acquisition and two years of intensive renovation by the Streeter family to restore the woodland gardens after eight years of closure and neglect under previous ownership. It was the largest UK garden restoration project since Heligan some 30 years before.
