The latest figures from a Sky News and Association of Convenience Stores survey confirm an alarming surge in retail crime, with 80% of shopkeepers reporting criminal incidents within a single week in October. The study also shows that 94% of retailers believe shoplifting has worsened over the past year.
“These statistics confirm what we’ve observed across the retail sector, and in our specialist area of luxury retailing - a dramatic escalation in both the frequency and boldness of theft-related incidents,” says Troy Hewitt, CEO of Assist Security Group (ASG). “The retail industry requires a fundamental shift in its approach to security, moving from reactive measures to proactive prevention.”
The survey highlights a critical lack of confidence in current prevention measures, with 83% of shopkeepers expressing doubt that police will take action against retail crime on their premises. This comes as police data shows shoplifting offences in England and Wales have reached their highest levels in two decades.
The British Retail Consortium reports that theft-related losses are costing the sector millions annually, adding pressure to businesses already managing economic challenges. For smaller retailers, the impact is particularly severe, with some independent stores reporting annual losses of up to £100,000 from theft alone.
Security Training
“The current situation demands more than just traditional security measures,” Hewitt explains. “Our experience shows that properly trained security personnel who understand both loss prevention and customer service make a significant difference. ASG’s officers receive specialist training in conflict management and de-escalation techniques, essential skills given the increasing confrontational nature of retail crime.”
Beyond physical security, ASG emphasises the importance of comprehensive staff training. The company offers specialised programmes for retail workers, equipping them with the skills to identify potential threats and respond appropriately to incidents while ensuring their own safety.
The recently announced Crime and Policing Bill, outlined in the King’s Speech, promises stronger measures against shoplifting and specific protection for retail workers. However, Hewitt argues that retailers cannot afford to wait for legislative changes: “While we welcome these legal developments, businesses need immediate solutions to protect their staff, assets, and bottom line.”
ASG’s approach combines highly trained security officers with staff development programmes, creating a comprehensive security framework that addresses both immediate protection needs and long-term risk management. This strategy has proven particularly effective in supporting retailers facing persistent theft issues.
Luxury Retail
The luxury retail sector in particular faces an unprecedented surge in sophisticated criminal activity, from analysis by ASG. Organised retail crime groups increasingly target luxury retailers through sophisticated operations, including smash-and-grab raids. In one case, four criminals who targeted luxury West End stores were jailed after stealing £465,000 worth of designer goods in coordinated ram-raids.
The threat landscape is complex, with customer theft alone representing eight million separate incidents annually, with losses of high-value jewellery, watches, fashion clothing and accessories. Additionally, retailers face potential insider risks, with industry data showing that over half of retail fraud has a cyber component that could be exploited by internal actors.
“The retail sector is at a critical juncture,” says Hewitt. “The solution lies in implementing professional security measures that not only deter crime but also support staff and protect business assets. This is about creating an environment where both employees and customers feel secure, while effectively preventing losses.”
