Wye Valley Brewery is a family run pub in Herefordshire. It’s a pioneer in its field for sustainable brewing. There mantra is visible throughout the production process, from the power at the brewery to the distribution of products. Wye Valley Brewery ensures it does everything it can to look after the eco system.
Wye Valley Brewery has currently got an estimated 25-26 thousand casks and kegs in stock. Dwarfing the original 30, the business started with 40 years ago. But this isn’t the best bit, because the casks and kegs are recycled and reused over and over,, some of the original 30 casks are still being used today!
Keeping the beer at the right temperature at any Brewery is difficult and it requires a lot of electricity. However, Wye Valley Brewery are tackling this issue head on. Having invested in what is known as The Free Air Cooler. This piece of machinery can cool the beer down using cool ambient air. Providing the air temperature is below four degrees Celsius. Meaning that no electricity is needed to cool the beer, just natural air. Given the location of the Brewery and the fact that we are after all, in England. The device gets it fair share of use (as you can probably imagine).
Wye Valley Brewery has recently invested in its fourth set of solar panels. Meaning the brewery now has a capacity of generating 400 kw of solar pv at one time. In the winter months although there isn’t much sunshine a considerable amount of electricity can be generated. In the summer months however (late May through to August) the Brewery can rely entirely on its solar panels.
Wye Valley Brewery also has a very large social media following (25.1k followers on Instagram - at the time of writing) They utilise this large following, showcasing the sustainable endeavours they are undertaking. With MD Vernon Amor having recently uploaded Reels highlighting the sustainable measures the brewery have put in place. In the hope that they can inspire other businesses and breweries, to think how they are thinking, and take action in helping to reduce their carbon footprint.
