A Hotel Stay for the Traitors-obsessed

Read Time: 4 mins

Obsessed by The Traitors?  Wish you could have a superb castle experience without being killed off overnight, or having to plot the downfall of others?  Well, at Langley Castle Hotel in Northumberland, you can.

The castle is as authentic as they come in England, being a knight’s fortress dating from 1350, with fortifications and seven-feet-thick stone walls untouched over the centuries.  The interiors also have a remarkable percentage of authentic, original features, so you can truly believe that you are in a real castle, despite all the modern touches and luxurious elements.

You will also most certainly be in a traitors castle.  Two of the owners from the early 18th century – James and Charles Radcliffe - were both executed at the Tower of London for their parts in the Jacobite uprisings of 1715 and 1745.

Of the nine rooms inside the castle, the Radcliffe and Tower Rooms are hugely popular, referencing the brothers viewed as traitors, but believing they supported the rightful king.

The castle rooms are split into Feature and Deluxe, according to their facilities, which range from sauna and spa bath to walk-in dressing room.  But if you fancy doing what The Traitors’ contestants do and arriving at the castle for your breakfast each morning, you can stay in the Langley Castle grounds, either in Castle View, Castle Lodge or the two-bedroomed self-catering cottage, The Toll Bar Luxury Villa.  Even those self-catering can opt for meals in the castle, if they wish, enjoying for a hearty Northumbrian breakfast, afternoon teas, fine dining or relaxed dining alongside the hotel guests.

Whilst you won’t have daily challenges to complete, you can set your own.  You could decide to walk a stretch of nearby Hadrian’s Wall, or take another glorious walk in a local area teeming with options.  You might decide to challenge yourself with fishing rod and tackle on a local river. There is the challenge of taking a Heritage Trail around nearby Hexham, or maybe even that of winning a bet placed on a horse at nearby Hexham Racecourse.

For some, the challenge might be that of negotiating the twists and bends on the A686 up steep Hartside from Penrith, with this deemed one of England’s most beautiful drives by the AA.  This route leads directly to Langley Castle’s door.

The Drawing Room is the perfect place for some confidential chats, with its sparkling chandeliers, roaring log fire and mesmerising ambience.  Spotting shields is another pastime to enjoy, with plenty around the castle to discover, whether with a knight in shining armour or near the 12 medieval garderobes – the best example of such features in Europe.

Langley Castle is a super-popular venue for a Whodunnit Murder Mystery experience, given all the nooks and crannies in which wrongdoing could occur and you can discover plenty of these on the Daily Battlements Tour, free for all guests.

Climb up a few steps to a window seat set into the walls of your castle bedroom or the Drawing Room and you will enjoy an experience that Traitors TV contestants never seem to get – acting like the real King or Queen of the castle.

Meanwhile, dine in much more sophisticated fashion than they seem to do, in the candle-lit, atmospheric Josephine Restaurant.  This is now under the command of Mark Greenaway, a highly regarded chef and London and Edinburgh restaurateur, who featured on The Great British Menu in 2012 and 2013, and has also appeared on Saturday Kitchen and Sunday Brunch.

But does Langley Castle have peacocks too?  You bet it does.  The resident peacocks are an absolute draw for guests and have inspired a new Peacock Cocktail on the drinks menu.

Stays at Langley Castle are priced per room, rather than per person, with room rates for Autumn 2026 ranging from £150 for Castle Lodge and View rooms, to £350 for stays inside the castle.
