Summer is here, and it’s the perfect time to step outside, soak up some sunshine and reconnect with nature. Not only is spending time outside a great way to have fun and explore, but it also does wonders for your mental health. In fact, a study of 20,000 people led by the European Centre for Environment & Human Health found that those who spent as few as 20 minutes each day in nature were more likely to report good health and improved mental well-being compared to those who didn’t. Sean McMenemy, passionate nature expert and founder of Ark Wildlife, shares some advice on how you can get outdoors and surround yourself with wonderful wildlife.
Be at one with the birds
“Wildlife watching is like a live-action nature documentary, but better because you’re a part of the adventure! Birdwatching is a fantastic starting point, and you don’t need any special gear—just find a peaceful spot, sit quietly, and keep your eyes peeled for feathered friends. With our handy online wildlife guides, you’ll be the resident bird nerd before you know it! Summer is a great time to spot a variety of birds, including juveniles who can be seen following their parents as they learn the ropes of life. August is particularly ideal for bird spotting, as the evenings are dark but balmy enough for us to enjoy sitting out on the patio. The sight of a bright blue tit or the sound of a cheerful robin will undoubtedly bring a smile to your face.”
See what else you can spot
“Beyond birds, there’s a whole world of critters ready to be discovered - don’t forget about the little guys, too! Butterflies, dragonflies, and beetles are fascinating and often overlooked. Taking time to observe these tiny marvels can deepen your appreciation for nature’s beauty. It’s also the perfect time to look up as you enjoy a balmy August evening on the patio – you might get lucky and spot a bat flitting across the sky. From observing the intricate behaviours of insects to the magical sight of bats as they emerge in the dusk, wildlife watching provides endless opportunities for exploration and wonder.”
Hit the trails
“Nothing beats a good hike or a walk for a bit of exercise and relaxation. Whether you’re into a gentle stroll or a more challenging trek, being surrounded by nature is incredibly refreshing. Look up local trails in your area, and if you’re up for it, join a guided hike to learn more about the plants and wildlife you might encounter. Local Wildlife Trusts run lots of nature-friendly outdoor walks and talks to help you get started. It's a great way to de-stress and get a mood boost, as well as learn more about the magnificent creatures we share our local area with!”
Get involved in citizen science
“Fancy being a nature detective? Citizen science projects are your chance to help out while learning about the great outdoors. From counting chirpy birds to monitoring colourful butterflies, there’s a project for everyone. Check out local groups like the BTO, Butterfly Conservation or RSPB centres to find out how you can get involved. It's a fun way to contribute to conservation and feel like a part of something bigger, all while enjoying the fresh air.”
Capture nature with your camera
“Summer’s vibrant colours and lively scenes make it a photographer’s dream. Whether you’re wielding a professional camera or just your smartphone, nature is full of picture-perfect moments. Snap shots of blooming flowers, fluttering butterflies, or soaring birds. Just remember to keep a respectful distance from wildlife and let them be the stars of their own show. Capturing these moments is a delightful way to celebrate the beauty around you and share your adventures.”
Enhance your garden for wildlife
“If you’re struggling to get outside or don’t have the time for grand adventures, don’t worry—there’s plenty you can do right in your garden to immerse yourself in nature. Even small efforts like setting up a simple birdbath or creating a bumblebee cafe in a pot or planter can offer a peaceful retreat and bring the wonders of wildlife right to your doorstep. Gardening itself is a therapeutic way to connect with nature, providing both relaxation and satisfaction as you watch your garden flourish and invite more wildlife into your life, so why not get your hands in the soil!”
