Understanding Your Soil: The First Step to a Healthier Lawn

A healthy, green lawn starts beneath the surface. Did you know the type of soil in your garden has a major impact on how you should care for your grass? Different soils retain water and nutrients in different ways, meaning your lawncare routine should be tailored to suit the ground beneath your feet.  

The lawncare experts at Cobra are encouraging gardeners to take a closer look at what lies beneath their lawns, as understanding soil conditions can help create stronger roots, healthier grass and fewer maintenance issues throughout the year. 

Why soil type matters 

The soil your lawn grows in affects everything from drainage and nutrient availability to how often you need to water or mow. Understanding your soil type can help you create a thicker, healthier lawn while avoiding common problems such as waterlogging, dry patches and poor grass growth.  

How to Find Out What Soil You Have 

Not sure what lies beneath your lawn? Here are some simple ways to identify your soil type: 

Take a handful of moist soil and squeeze it in your hand. 

• Clay soil forms a sticky ball that holds its shape. 
• Sandy soil feels gritty and falls apart easily. 
• Loamy soil feels soft and crumbly and holds together loosely. 
• Chalky soil is stony and dries quickly. 
• Silt soil is smooth and silky. 
• Peaty soil is soft and spongy. 

Observing how water behaves after rainfall can also provide useful clues. Water that sits on the lawn surface for an extended period often points to clay soil, while water that drains away very quickly may indicate sandy or chalky ground.  

Different soil types 

Clay soil contains very fine particles that hold water and nutrients well, creating fertile conditions for grass. However, poor drainage often leads to compaction and waterlogging, restricting root growth. Cobra recommends regular aeration to improve airflow and drainage, alongside avoiding mowing on wet ground. A balanced fertiliser and organic top-dressing can further improve structure and encourage stronger, healthier lawns throughout the season. 

Sandy soil is made up of larger particles that drain quickly and warm up early in spring. While this supports early growth, it also means moisture and nutrients are easily lost, leaving grass vulnerable in dry conditions. Cobra advises deep, infrequent watering and regular light feeding to maintain nutrition levels. Allowing grass to grow slightly longer in summer helps retain moisture, while adding compost improves water-holding capacity. 

Loamy soil offers an ideal balance of drainage, moisture retention and nutrients, making it highly supportive of healthy grass growth. Lawns on this soil type typically require less intervention, though consistent care is still important. A steady mowing and feeding routine will help with seasonal watering during dry spells, and annual aeration. Occasional moss and thatch removal will also help maintain a dense, resilient lawn. 

Chalky soil is free-draining and naturally alkaline, which can restrict the availability of key nutrients for grass health. While it avoids waterlogging, lawns may struggle without targeted care. Using fertilisers designed for alkaline conditions, along with organic matter to improve moisture retention, will aid chalky soil. Regular watering in warm weather and overseeding thin patches will help maintain a fuller, greener lawn over time. 

Silt soil has a smooth texture and is naturally fertile, retaining both moisture and nutrients effectively. However, it is prone to compaction, especially in high-traffic areas. Cobra’s lawncare experts recommend regular aeration to maintain soil structure and ensure nutrients reach the roots. Limiting use in wet conditions and incorporating organic matter will further improve resilience, while monitoring drainage helps prevent seasonal issues. 

Peaty soil is rich in organic matter and holds moisture exceptionally well, supporting strong grass growth. However, excessive moisture can encourage moss and drainage problems if not managed carefully. Improving airflow through regular aeration and avoiding overwatering is key. Keeping an eye on moss development and maintaining balanced moisture levels will help ensure a healthy, well-structured lawn.
