Leading UK head and neck cancer charity Get A-Head has made a major donation to help support young adults living with tongue cancer.

The Birmingham-founded organisation has awarded a £20,000 grant to the Young Tongues charity to help its vital work supporting people diagnosed with the disease in younger life.

The money will help fund a new website and dedicated patient hub for Young Tongues.

Get A-Head director Danni Heath said the grant would help close a critical gap in support for younger adults navigating a complex diagnosis.

“Young Tongues is doing exceptional work for a group of patients who often fall between the gaps,” she said.

“This project will give young adults with tongue cancer access to reliable, compassionate and clinically safe information at a time when they need it most.

“It will also ease pressure on the NHS by reducing unnecessary appointments and providing a resource clinicians can confidently signpost patients to. We are delighted to be able to support it.”

Barbara Fountain, CEO and founder of Norwich-based Young Tongues, said the grant would be split between the technical build of the website and the recruitment of a part-time project administrator to support content development and volunteer co-ordination.

“This grant will allow us to build something lasting and meaningful that fills a real gap in care,” she said.

“The patient hub hosted on the website will present trusted, co-created content, based on real patient experiences and clinically reviewed, to support users in navigating diagnosis, treatment, recovery and life after treatment.

“It will empower patients to make informed decisions, manage side effects and advocate for timely care, helping to reduce health disparities and variation in outcomes.

“Many patients in this age group feel isolated and overwhelmed, with few resources that speak directly to their experiences. Our new website and patient hub will help close that gap and become a trusted place patients turn to during a very difficult time.”

Get A-Head continues to support innovative projects that enhance the care and quality of life for people affected by head and neck disease.
