Copper and Green is delighted to introduce its brand new Copper Pot Rings. These heavy-duty, handmade pot rings created from pure copper, can be physically attached to plant pots without adhesive, as a repellent to slugs that is also incredible hard wearing with great aesthetic appeal.
Copper and Green founder and copper-smith, Paul Selley, says: “I have been selling copper plant rings now for some time now and found that most people use them to place directly into the soil in their flower bed or vegetable patches. Whilst these proved very popular, I was often asked if I had an equivalent product that could go around plant pots to stop slugs and snails eating potted plants.
“I was told that the copper coated tape you can buy for pots worked well for a while but did not always adhere to porous pots (e.g. terracotta) and if it did stick, it did not last well for more than a season or two, ending up ineffective and tatty. With this in mind, I set about designing a high quality copper pot ring that can be attached to pots without adhesive and that will last for many years”.
As every pot is different, the main design challenge came from designing a copper ring that would fit pots of every conceivable size or shape. After much trial and error, Paul came up with a modular design which enables pieces to be linked together to fit any size of pot. The sections can then be tightened like a belt for a snug fit
around the pot's perimeter. Once adjusted to the right size, copper tabs are folded over the rim to hold the copper pot ring in place.
The 5cm rings are created from incredibly robust, pure copper metal that will last a lifetime, making them a great investment and ideal gift for discerning gardeners who want practical solutions that also look fabulous. Durable, attractive, and eco-friendly, these rings offer an innovative solution to an age-old gardening problem. Consider integrating pure copper pot rings for your pots into your gardening routine and enjoy the peace of mind that comes with protecting your plants effectively and sustainably.
Sizes and RRPs
The modular system is available in four sizes - small, medium, large, and XXL - to ultimately fit around just about any size of pot, from 18cm to 75cm diameter. They can even be bent to fit non-circular pots. Paul believes they are a unique addition to the marketplace, adding that he has “not seen any other copper product that provides pot protection like this”.
RRPs: Small (min 18cm pot diameter/max 30cm) £15; medium (min 25cm pot diameter/max 45cm) £20; large (min 35cm pot diameter/max 60 cm) £26; XXL (min 45cm pot diameter/max 75) £34.
Why Copper Works to Deter Slugs
Copper is a natural slug deterrent. When slugs come into contact with this marvellous metal, a small reaction occurs that they find unpleasant, effectively repelling them. This means your plants remain safe without the need for harmful chemicals or repeated applications of repellents. It’s a sustainable choice that’s kind to the environment and your garden.
Advantages Over Copper Tape
Whilst copper tape has been a popular choice for slug prevention, it comes with several downsides. Copper tape often struggles to adhere properly to pots, especially in outdoor conditions where moisture and dirt can weaken the adhesive. Additionally, many gardeners find that copper tape lasts only a single season before needing replacement.
Pure copper pot rings offer a far more robust and durable solution. By attaching securely to your plant pots, these rings remain in place regardless of weather conditions. Made from 100% copper, they resist corrosion and maintain their effectiveness season after season, providing excellent value for money.
Perfect for Pots
Most slug deterrent products are designed to rest in or on soil. This approach can be limiting, particularly for potted plants where the soil surface may be minimal. Pure copper pot rings for plant pots solve this problem by attaching directly to the plant pot, forming an unbroken barrier that slugs do not wish to cross. They’re especially effective for protecting container-grown hostas, annuals, and salad vegetables.
