L.B. Foster Professional Development Scheme Receives IMechE Accreditation

A professional development programme for engineers at Sheffield-based L.B. Foster Rail Technologies has received accreditation by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), the professional body representing mechanical engineers and the engineering profession.

IMechE's Professional Development Standards Committee has now accredited the L.B. Foster Engineering Professional Development Scheme for the development of Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and Chartered Engineer (CEng) for a period of three years, until 27 June 2022. 

Marilyn Coulton is Head of Human Resources at L.B. Foster Europe. She says: “L.B. Foster is recognised across the rail sector for delivering innovation across its portfolio of track products and friction management solutions. The business has achieved multiple accreditations for quality, performance and environmental standards, so we felt it appropriate to benchmark our professional development programme against the best the industry has to offer. 

“The Institution of Mechanical Engineers has over 120,000 members in 140 countries worldwide. It has been setting standards since its inception in 1847. Today IMechE accreditation is what every engineering business wants to achieve and we are delighted that the professional development programme that we have developed for our staff has been recognised by the Institution.”

The Professional Development Standards Committee noted a number of strengths in L.B. Foster’s scheme, including that it is well structured and resourced, with a high level of support across the business. In addition, management processes are comprehensive, well established and effective

and mentors demonstrate good understanding of IMechE requirements.

A number of our senior team members have already achieved recognition from IMechE. What our new programme offers is the opportunity for all relevant staff to achieve professional recognition from the sector’s leading professional body.”
