Gardeners urged to protect plants now ahead of Spring slug boom

With 2024 being branded as the year of the slug with many gardeners having experienced the heartbreak of hole-filled hostas, nibbled vegetables and failed seedlings, green-fingered folk are already thinking about how they can prevent this occurring again in 2025. Thankfully, there is the perfect natural ally, Nemaslug 2.0.

Nemaslug 2.0, the top beneficial nematode defence against slugs, can be applied in the garden until soil temperatures consistently drop below 5ºC (41ºF), usually around November. This final application of the year can significantly help next year’s crops!

While slugs are active year-round, they are especially prominent in spring and autumn months when conditions are most favourable for them to thrive. Not only that, but the autumn months are also when slugs begin to lay eggs, which will go on to hatch when the weather warms again in spring, hungry and ready to feast on fragile plants.

The nematodes present inside Nemaslug are the same as the ones that occur naturally in the soil. They seek out and kill slugs by entering their bodies and releasing a bacterium. The nematodes then reproduce inside the dying pest and release a new generation of hungry nematodes that go on to look for new prey while protecting your patch, dying down to their original numbers once their prey has been decimated.

Unlike other slug control methods, Nemaslug is still effective in the wet autumn weather, as it isn't diluted or washed away by rain. Since it's applied directly into the soil, where slugs spend most of their time, the nematodes can immediately target the pests and start protecting your plants.

Using an organically compatible pest control method like nematodes in your garden means the soil stays healthy while slugs are defeated – leaving your plants protected and thriving!

This small but powerful box of fresh nematodes can be delivered directly to a gardeners’ doors to ensure that slugs can be controlled effectively by harnessing the power of nature.

Editors notes

Nematodes are naturally occurring microscopic worms, already present in our soil. Beneficial nematodes attack and kill targeted garden pests. They are compatible with organic farming, easy to use and can even be kept in your fridge!

Research scientists have isolated the nematodes that kill specific garden pests including Slugs, Vine weevils, Leatherjackets, Caterpillars, Codling moth and much more.

BASF’s state of the art production facility in the UK produces billions of nematodes in a form that is easily applied by gardeners. Over 20,000 different species of nematodes have been classified, although some estimates put the total figure closer to one million! BASF has the largest specialist nematode production facility in the world, growing trillions of beneficial nematodes for use in their Nemasys range of pest control products.

BASF experts are available for interviews, features and expert comment on biological pest control management, and product is available for reviews, competitions and product trials.
